San Diego, Calif. – Deuce Turner and Kevin Patton Jr. combined for 33 points off the bench to lead the University of San Diego to an 80-71 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Friday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Junior forward
Ocypher Owens (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep/Indian River State) led the Dolphins offensively with 21 points, including 13 in the second half, while grabbing eight rebounds and blocking two shots. Graduate student guard
Mike DePersia (Cherry Hill, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial/IUPUI) tallied 12 points, including eight in the second half, dished out six assists and posted five steals. Senior guard
Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) recorded 11 points and three rebounds.
Turner led the Toreros with 19 points, including 11 in the first half. Kevin Patton Jr. registered 14 points, including nine in the first half, a game-high nine rebounds, including seven in the second half, and dished out three assists.
The Dolphins opened the game with the first 10 points. Graduate student guard
Kaiyem Cleary (Manchester, England/Redemption Christian Academy (NY)/Florida Southern/Florida Southwestern/Ball State) started the scoring with a jumper from the left of the paint. Graduate student forward
Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) followed with a fast-break three-pointer from the left wing and then Jones Jr. drained a triple from the right wing. The following possession, Jones Jr. scored in the paint for the 10-0 lead with 16:41 left.
San Diego, which is led by former UCLA and St. John's head coach Steve Lavin, answered with 10 of the next 14 points to cut its deficit to four with 13:43 to go in the half. Turner and Patton Jr. each scored five points in the span.
Following three points from each team, Owens made a jumper and a three-pointer to push Le Moyne's margin back to nine with 10:37 remaining.
Turner and PJ Hayes answered with consecutive three-pointer to pull the Toreros within three, but Owens had a put-back lay-up and Cleary buried a three-pointer with 8:32 left to give the Dolphins their final eight-point lead of the game at 27-19.
San Diego responded with 11 straight points to take the lead and 17 of the next 18 to force a Le Moyne timeout with 4:39 left. Six different Toreros accounted for the 17 points, led by four each from Wayne McKinney III and Keyon Kensie.
Turner pushed the lead to 10 with a three-pointer with 1:06 left, while graduate student guard
Nate McClure (Houston, Texas/Concordia Lutheran/Texas State/State Fair C.C./IUPUI) answered with a three-pointer and then McKinney III made two free throws to give the Toreros a 43-34 lead at halftime.
After Jimmy Oladokun Jr. started the scoring in the second with a conventional three-point play, the Dolphins cut their deficit in half with the next six points, four of which came from Owens.
San Diego countered with 22 of the next 31 points to take its largest lead of the game. Seven players scored in the span with Turner drilling a pair of three-pointers and Santiago Trouet capping the run with a put-back lay-up.
Following two three-pointers by the Dolphins around five points from the Toreros, the Dolphins rattled off a 13-2 run to trim its deficit to just seven with 1:31 remaining. Sutherland and DePersia buried three-pointers to start the streak, Owens made a lay-up and then DePersia made three free throws around a shot in the paint to get the Dolphins within 75-68.
The Toreros closed out the game with five points around three from Owens.
