Ocypher Owens (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep/Indian River State) scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 92-72 victory over Houghton University in non-conference action on Monday evening at Ted Grant Court.
Owens registered 17 of his 26 points in the second half, while pulling down five rebounds and dishing out three assists in the game. He connected on a career high-tying 10 shots, including a pair of three-pointers. Graduate student guard
Kaiyem Cleary (Manchester, England/Redemption Christian Academy (NY)/Florida Southern/Florida Southwestern/Ball State) recorded 19 points for the second straight game, including 11 in the first half, and added five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. Graduate student guard
Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) registered a season-high 15 points, including 10 in the second half, and had four rebounds and four steals, while graduate student guard
Nate McClure (Houston, Texas/Concordia Lutheran/Texas State/State Fair C.C./IUPUI) posted 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The team's 19 steals are the second-most by the Dolphins over the last 22 years and are the most since they had 20 against Green Mountain on December 28, 2004. The team's 26 assists are the fifth-most by the program over the last 22 years and the most at home since having 33 against Green Mountain on December 29, 2005.
Jajuan Preaster led the Highlanders with 17 points, including 11 in the second half, while posting seven assists and five rebounds. Preston Thomas hit five three-pointers en route to 15 points, including four trifectas in the second half. Aaron Johnson and Trey Flatt each had 12 points, while Johnson had six rebounds and Flatt dished out five assists. The Highlanders became the first Dolphin opponent not to make a foul shot since Seton Hill University went 0-for-2 from the free throw line on December 31, 2014. They are the first team to not even take an attempt in over 22 years.
After the teams traded baskets over the opening four minutes of the game, the Dolphins scored nine of the next 11 points to take a 17-11 lead with 11:32 remaining in the first half. Cleary scored the first five points of the run, while Owens had the final four.
The Highlanders answered with three-pointers from Johnson and Brandon Taylor to even the score at 17 with just over 10 minutes left.
Le Moyne responded with 10 consecutive points over 2:02. Owens started the streak with a conventional three-point play, Salter made a jumper and a three-pointer and then McClure converted a fast-break lay-up off a steal.
Houghton, specifically Johnson, countered with seven consecutive points to get back within three and force a Le Moyne timeout.
The Dolphins scored 12 of the next 16 points to take their largest lead of the half, 39-28, with 1:33 to go. Sophomore guard
Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass./Belmont Hill School) ignited the run with a conventional three-point play, McClure followed with a put-back lay-up and then graduate student guard
Mike DePersia (Cherry Hill, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial/IUPUI) buried a three-pointer and a free throw around a three-pointer by Cleary.
Taylor made a jumper with 46 seconds left to get the Highlanders within 39-30 at halftime.
After Houghton scored five of the first seven points of the second half, the Dolphins scored nine straight points and 13 of the next 15 to take a 17-point lead and force a Houghton timeout. Owens had a conventional three-point play to start the streak, graduate student forward
Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) followed with a pair of lay-ups around a basket in the paint by Owens and then Cleary had back-to-back dunks.
Following a three-pointer by Thomas out of the timeout, Le Moyne rattled off the next nine points. Sutherland made a lay-up, McClure buried a three-pointer and made a fast-break lay-up and then Owens had a fast-break lay-up.
Houghton made back-to-back lay-ups to trim its deficit under 20, but Owens drilled a three-pointer and Salter made a fast-break lay-up to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the game, 68-44, with 11:21 to play.
Houghton scored 22 of the next 30 points to get the Highlanders within 10 with 5:06 to go. Thomas drained a trio of three-pointers in the span, while Flatt hit two, Preaster scored five points and Luke Cole made a jumper.
Le Moyne responded with a 14-2 run to push its lead back to 22, 90-68, with just over 90 seconds left. Owens and McClure made three-pointers, Owens connected on two foul shots and then Salter drained back-to-back three-pointers.
Houghton scored twice in the paint around a lay-up by Salter to deliver the final score.
Le Moyne (5-7) plays its penultimate non-conference game on Thursday at Penn State University at 7:00 p.m. The game will air on Peacock, NBCUniversal's streaming service.
