MEN’S TENNIS SWEEPS COLGATE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR, 7-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team defeated Colgate University for the second straight year, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.

"A great weekend for the boys," said head coach Jeff Lonczak '03. "Winning your opener over a nationally-ranked Edinboro club was difficult. We worked through some early jitters to clinch doubles with an amazing comeback by Manny and Peter at two. That propelled us to play solid enough singles to win. Colgate was a much more complete match by us. We swept doubles and singles, even though Colgate tested us at every spot making us go the distance at 2, 4, 5 and 6. It's a testament to the mental toughness that these guys all have. None of us take our positions for granted."

The Dolphins captured the point in the doubles competition with a sweep of the three matches. Graduate student Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) and senior Ethan Miller (Swindon, England/Cirencetser Kingshill School) were victorious at the first position, 6-3, over Aidan Lee and Benito Vlassis. Sophomore Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) and graduate student Manuel Righi (Bologna, Italy/IPC Manfredi - ITC Tanari/Concordia (N.Y.)/Universita di Bologna) were also 6-3 winners at the second spot over Jack Selati and Josh Israel. Senior Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and graduate student Fabian Sjokvist (Helsingborg, Sweden/Campeon Frigymnasium/Lincoln Memorial) completed the sweep with a 6-5 (8-6) win at the third position over Mason Caldwell and John Fazli.

Le Moyne also swept the singles competition, with four of the six matches going to three sets. Playing at the first position for the first time in his career, Hatton was a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) winner over Selati. Jarry earned his 47th career victory, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, over Max Litton at the second spot. Piekarek downed Lee at the third position, 6-1, 7-5. Senior Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense) earned his first victory as a Dolphin, 7-5, 3-6, 6-5 (7-3), at the fourth spot over Vlassis. Righi won at the fifth position over Tejas Gupta, 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. Miller picked up his first dual match win of the campaign, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, at the sixth spot over Mike Thomas.

Le Moyne (3-0), which won its 22nd straight regular season match, returns to the courts on Friday against Hobart College at 7:00 p.m. at Elevate Fitness.
