Cary, N.C. – The Le Moyne College baseball team (1-2, 0-0 NE10) earned their first victory of the season on Saturday, a 10-6 triumph over Mercy College (0-2) at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Graduate second baseman
Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)) and freshman third baseman
Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) both recorded a game-high three hits during the win. Keneston drove in a game-high four runs, while Carroll added two RBIs.
Graduate first baseman
Andrew Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell), junior catcher
Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) and junior left fielder
Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) each registered two hits on Saturday, and Boule scored a team-best three runs during the win.
Graduate right-hander
Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) started the game on the mound for the 'Phins and went 3.0 innings. Junior right-hander
Kennen Smith (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, then senior right-hander
Sam DiGeorge (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) did not allow a baserunner in the final 2.0 innings to earn the save.
Le Moyne took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Keneston singled to center field to drive in
Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) from second base.
Mercy answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Keneston smashed a two-out solo home run over the left field wall to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning.
Mercy freshman outfielder Zach Ashline drove in two runs with a single to right field in the bottom of the third to put the Mavericks up 4-2.
Le Moyne got both runs back in the top of the fourth, as Boule blasted an RBI double into right center to score
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) all the way from first base, then Carroll lifted an RBI sacrifice fly into center field later in the inning to tie the game at 4-4.
Mercy scored two more runs in the bottom of the 5
th to once again take the lead.
Le Moyne loaded the bases with zero outs in the top of the seventh, then Keneston lifted a fly ball to center field which allowed Carroll to tag up and score from third base.
The bases were loaded once again later in the inning when
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) drew a walk with runners on first and second.
Fureno then ripped a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Roden and tie the game at 6-6.
Smith delivered a timely 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh, then the 'Phins took the lead in the top of the eighth.
Boule led off the eighth inning with a walk, then Carroll dropped down a bunt single to third base, and Roden ripped a single into right field.
With one out in the inning, Keneston delivered another RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Boule from third and give Le Moyne a 7-6 advantage.
DiGeorge entered the game for the bottom of the eighth inning and got three straight ground ball outs to put the bats back in the Dolphins' hands.
Le Moyne tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 10-6, then DiGeorge delivered a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts to earn the save and secure the win for the 'Phins.
The Dolphins will conclude their weekend trip to Cary with another nine-inning contest against Mercy on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
