Syracuse, N.Y. – The No. 1 seed Le Moyne College women's basketball team (21-6, 11-3 NE10) fell in overtime during the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships on Sunday to the No. 8 seed Pace University Setters (14-15, 9-11 NE10) by a score of 49-47.
It was Le Moyne's first loss since January 7, when the Dolphins lost to the same Pace team on their home floor in regular season action.
"We knew coming in that they were a good defensive team, but so are we, and you can see by the score, obviously. They got to a couple loose balls that we didn't get to down the stretch. We're going to get into the NCAA tournament, we can't hang our heads for long. This one definitely hurts, but my team – they did everything I asked. They did everything I asked. We're going to regroup and get ready for the NCAA tournament," Said Le Moyne head coach
Mary Grimes after the game.
It was a defensive battle all afternoon long inside the Le Moyne Events Center, as the Dolphins shot just 15-56 (26.8%) from the field, including 3-13 (23.1%) from three-point land, compared to 19-63 (30.2%) shooting for the Setters, including 5-26 (19.2%) from long range.
The Setters shot just 6-19 (31.6%) from the free-throw line, compared to 14-22 (63.6%) for Le Moyne.
Pace created 13 second-chance points via 19 offensive rebounds, while the 'Phins scored four second-chance points with nine offensive boards.
Senior guard
Lytoya Baker (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) tallied her NE10-leading 15
th double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds along with a game-high three blocks.
Redshirt-sophomore forward
Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) also scored 14 points for Le Moyne while tallying five rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
Redshirt-freshman guard
Sydney Lusher (Oneida, N.Y./Oneida) provided seven points, seven rebounds and three assists, while freshman guard
Kaia Goode (Rochester, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) added six points, a team-high four assists and a team-high four steals.
Sophomore forward Tower Lorde led Pace with 15 points, 16 rebounds and four steals.
Graduate guard Lauren Hackett and sophomore forward Arianna Stockinger also scored in double figures for Pace with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Setters held their largest lead of the game, a 41-37 advantage, with 5:25 remaining in the fourth period.
During Le Moyne's next possession,
Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) drilled a catch-and-shoot three pointer from the right corner to trim their deficit to one.
With just under three minutes remaining in regulation, Baker drove across the paint to the right block, pivoted back to the middle, absorbed contact and finished a tough shot in the lane over two Pace defenders to give Le Moyne a 42-41 lead.
Shanice Sinclair answered with a bucket in the paint for Pace, then Lusher drew a foul at the other end and made a free throw to tie the game at 43-43.
Pace grabbed an offensive rebound and drew a foul on Le Moyne with 40 seconds left in the fourth. Once play was restarted, the Setters got the ball to Hackett on the left wing.
Hackett attempted to take a three, but Baker pressured her, blocked the perimeter shot, then grabbed the rebound and called timeout to give Le Moyne possession with a chance to win the game.
During Le Moyne's final possession of the fourth quarter, Goode drove into the paint and dropped off a pass to Roberts. Roberts absorbed contact and wasn't able to convert her contested shot, but the ball went out of bounds off Pace with one second remaining. Le Moyne head coach
Mary Grimes set up a great play that freed Baker for a lob at the right block. Goode threw the pass on target, then Baker caught the ball in the air and shot it towards the hoop in one fluid motion.
Baker's shot was well contested, and it bounced off the backboard, then the side of the rim and out as time expired, sending the contest to overtime.
Pace made two three-point field goals within the first two minutes of the overtime period to take a four-point lead, but the Setters missed all six of their free throws during the five-minute frame, leaving the door open for Le Moyne to tie the game late.
Leading 49-47 with three seconds remaining in overtime, Pace missed their final two free throws. Le Moyne got the rebound and called timeout, which allowed them to advance the ball into the front court.
Following the timeout, coach Grimes, who should be heavily considered for the Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year Award, set up another great play for the 'Phins on the sideline inbounds.
Baker and Roberts, both facing the inbounder, stood on the left wing and near the left elbow, respectively, with Gruss on the opposite side of the floor near half court, and Linnin in the right corner.
Lusher, the inbounder, watched as Roberts set a back screen for Baker, who looped around and raced towards the right block.
Lusher threw the pass over the defense, Baker adjusted her run to make a contested catch of the ball, then shot a difficult contested layup off the left side of the backboard that hung on the rim for a moment before falling off back down to the ground.
With the win, the Setters advance to the NE10 tournament semifinals where they will meet the No. 4 seed Bentley University Falcons.
The Le Moyne women's basketball team, who are ranked third in the most recent East Region rankings, will wait to see where they land in the NCAA tournament field.
