TOP-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF FOR 14-6 WIN OVER SAINT MICHAEL’S

Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman midfielder Alec Constable (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) tallied five points to lead the top-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 14-6 victory over Saint Michael's College on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.

"We need to address the slow starts," said head coach Dan Sheehan. "I was happy with our play in the second half. If we can put together two halves - it will be fun to watch."

The Dolphins scored the first two goals of the game. Off a pass from Constable, junior attackman Joey Pezzimenti (Victor, N.Y./Victor/UAlbany) tallied his 18th goal of the season with 12:25 left in the first quarter. Just over two and one-half minutes later, junior midfielder Kyle Caves (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded his 15th goal of the year after collecting a pass from junior swingman Seth Benedict (Stanley, N.Y./Marcus Whitman).

Saint Michael's, which received votes in last week's USILA poll, answered with the final three goals of the quarter. Sebastian Simonson got the Purple Knights on the scoreboard at the 8:25 mark with his 15th goal of the year off a feed from Drew Collins, who followed at the 6:02 mark with his 20th marker of the season. Simonson scored again with 3:26 remaining in the period after taking a pass from Ethan Hughes.

Le Moyne scored the first two goals of the second quarter. Graduate student attackman Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) evened the score at three apiece at the 13:35 mark off a feed from Benedict. Constable put the Dolphins back in front at the 9:30 mark with his second goal of the season.

Out of a timeout, Christian Reyes netted his sixth goal of the season at the 6:37 mark following a dish from Alex Chirgwin.

Senior midfielder Griffin Ackley (Parkton, Md./Calvert Hall) gave the lead back to the Dolphins with 5:48 remaining in the half with his third goal of the year after collecting a pass from redshirt sophomore midfielder Ethan Loun (West Linn, Ore./West Linn).

Reyes evened the score for the fourth time with an unassisted tally with 1:52 remaining in the half.

The Dolphins took control of the game with all six of the third quarter's goals. Following three empty possessions by each team to open the period, Sheehan put the Dolphins in front for good at the 9:20 mark with his eighth goal of the season from the right side of the crease off a feed from Constable. After scooping up a loose ball, redshirt sophomore short-stick defensive midfielder Dom DelPonte (Upper Saddle, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) raced up field and netted his second career goal with 7:34 remaining. Caves pushed the lead to 8-5 with 6:02 left off a feed from Pezzimenti. Two minutes later, Constable scored his second goal of the game for a four-goal lead off a pass from sophomore attackman Isaac Frechette (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) to force a timeout. Another two minutes later, Loun registered his 11th goal of the campaign after accepting a pass from Ackley. Frechette capped the scoring in the quarter with 13 seconds left after taking a feed from Sheehan.

Le Moyne extended its run to nine straight goals with the first three of the fourth quarter. Caves opened the scoring at the 12:56 mark following a pass from Loun. One and one-half minutes later, Pezzimenti finished off a pass from Constable for a 13-5 lead. Following almost eight minutes of scoreless play, freshman attackman Owen Wilson (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) scored on his first career shot after taking a pass from Ackley in an extra-man situation.

Collins completed the game's scoring with eight seconds remaining.

Graduate student goalkeeper Matt Vavonese (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Canisius) earned the victory after making eight saves (against five goals) over 56:20 between the pipes. Spencer Scardino suffered the loss after allowing seven goals, against four saves, in 17:04 of action after taking over at halftime.

Le Moyne (8-0, 4-0 NE10), which improved to 31-0 against the Purple Knights, including 25-0 in NE10 play, returns to action next Saturday at Assumption University at 2:00 p.m. in the second half of another doubleheader with the women.
