Flushing, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team had its 33-match Division II regular season win streak snapped with a 4-2 setback to Queens College on Thursday night in non-conference action at the QC Tennis Bubble.
The Dolphins suffered their first loss to a Division II program in the regular season since a 4-3 defeat to Merrimack College on April 14, 2019.
The Knights (13-3), ranked 44th nationally, took a 1-0 lead in the match by claiming the point in the doubles competition. Moritz Borges and Omar El Shehawey started off the night by downing seniors
Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and
Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense), 6-2, at the third position. Sophomore
Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) and graduate student
Manuel Righi (Bologna, Italy/IPC Manfredi - ITC Tanari/Concordia (N.Y.)/Universita di Bologna) evened doubles at one apiece with a 7-5 victory over Roni Rikkonen and Kareem Rashad in their first match at the top spot. Lucas Demuth and Lluis Miralles Miro edged graduate student
Tom Jarry (Paris, France/CNED Toulouse/Emmanuel) and senior
Ethan Miller (Swindon, England/Cirencetser Kingshill School) via a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-1), at the second position to clinch the point.
The teams alternated wins in the singles competition until the Knights clinched the match. Miralles Miro put Queens up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the sixth position over graduate student
Alberto Diaz (Tenerife, Spain/Benito Pérez Armas/Nebraska-Kearney/Midwestern State). Hatton got the Dolphins on the scoreboard with his sixth consecutive victory, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0, over Rikkonen at the top spot. Borges put the Knights back up by two with back-to-back 6-3 wins over Piekarek at the fifth position. Miller tallied his fifth straight win, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, over Demuth at the fourth spot to pull the Dolphins within 3-2. Rashad closed out the win for the Knights by rallying to defeat Jarry at the third position, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Cameron Henricy was leading Righi in the third set, 3-2, after the two split the first two sets, 6-4, 2-6, when the match was decided.
Le Moyne (10-2) returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Friday at Adelphi University at 12:00 p.m.
