SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE SWEEPS BASEBALL

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University Owls completed a four-game series sweep of the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday with two more wins over the Dolphins at Dick Rockwell Field.

Game one of Saturday's doubleheader, which was scheduled to be a seven-inning contest, went to extra innings after the two NE10 Southwest Division foes were tied 7-7 at the end of the seventh.

SCSU scored five runs in the top of the ninth with the help of three Le Moyne errors to claim a 12-7 win in game one.

The Owls earned a 5-1 win during the second half of the doubleheader behind 6.0 strong innings from graduate right-handed starting pitcher Tommy Benincaso.

Graduate center fielder Drew Carroll (Clifton Park, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Albany)), graduate first baseman Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) and freshman third baseman Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) recorded two hits and two RBIs each during game one.

Billy Sullivan, Colin Mason, Andrew Eng and Connor Goggin each scored two runs during the Owls' 12-7 win. Eng drew four walks during game one, while Goggin launched a three-run home run.

Eng delivered a two-run home run in the top of the fifth in game two to extend SCSU's lead to 4-1.

Roden provided Le Moyne's lone RBI in game two with a single to right field in the bottom of the fourth.

Goggin's home run in game one gave the Owls a 5-0 lead, then Le Moyne got three runs back in the bottom of the third.

Carroll was hit by a pitch with two outs and nobody on, then Nick Nevins singled through the right side.

Wyatt Patchett drew a walk to load the bases, then Roden drove in Carroll and Nevins with a base hit through the right side. Patchett advanced to third on the play, and was driven in by a Keneston single to left field.

Le Moyne's game one starter Jacob Maser (Chittenango, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) delivered a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth, then Carroll blasted a two-run home run, his second long ball of the season, over the left field fence in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 5-5.

The Owls took back the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Roden ripped a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth, then Keneston ripped a triple down the right field line to drive in Roden and make it a one-run game.

Following a walk by Zach Brush, Adam Sullivan ripped a single up the middle to drive in Keneston and tie the game at 7-7.

SCSU loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth, but Le Moyne senior right-hander Sam DiGeorge recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and keep the game tied.

Carroll led off the bottom of the sixth with a double to center field, but SCSU graduate right-hander Matt Smith retired the next three batters to end the inning.

The Dolphins were unable to put a runner on base in the seventh or eighth innings, then the Owls put up five runs in the top of the ninth.

Smith delivered another scoreless inning in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win for the Owls.

The Le Moyne College baseball team (15-15, 0-4 NE10) will play another four-game conference series on April 15 and 16 against Saint Rose.

On Sunday, April 16, there will be a special ceremony on Dick Rockwell Field to honor the Hall of Fame Coach Dick Rockwell and fellow Le Moyne Hall of Famer Eric Holstein. Both Rockwell and Holstein's Le Moyne numbers will be retired as the Le Moyne baseball program celebrates its 75th season.
