TOP-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE ADVANCES TO NCAA SEMIFINALS FOR 17TH TIME WITH 11-7 VICTORY OVER FOURTH-RANKED ADELPHI

Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore midfielder Ethan Loun (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) tallied a career high-tying three goals to lead the top-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to an 11-7 victory over fourth-ranked and fifth-seeded Adelphi University in the NCAA Championships quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

With the victory, the Dolphins advance to the NCAA semifinals for the fourth straight season and the 17th time in the last 21 seasons and will host seventh-ranked and second-seeded Mercyhurst University on Sunday, May 21 at 1:00 p.m. Mercyhurst advanced to the semifinals with a 10-9 win over sixth-seeded Saint Anselm College. The Dolphins and the Lakers will meet for the 11th time, including the fourth time in NCAA Championships play, while the Lakers will be making their first trip to the Le Moyne campus.

"How tough are my guys!!" said head coach Dan Sheehan. "A week filled with emotions all over the place and they respond like fierce competitors. We are grateful for another week together."

The Dolphins close out their Upstate-Downstate rivalry with the Panthers with a 22-10 record over 32 all-time matchups, including a mark of 17-6 since Adelphi joined the Northeast-10 Conference prior to the 2010 season, and a 3-0 mark in NCAA Championships matchups.

Le Moyne opened the game's scoring just 43 seconds into the contest after junior swingman Seth Benedict (Stanley, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) curled around the right side of the cage.

The Panthers responded with the next two goals to take the lead. Logan Tucker knotted the score at one apiece at the 10:08 mark with his 42nd goal of the season. Just over four minutes later, Eamon Hall scored from the right edge of the crease off a feed from Jason Rebaudo.

The Dolphins netted the first two goals of the second quarter to take the lead back. After almost 12 minutes of scoreless action in the contest, junior midfielder Kyle Caves (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) netted his 29th goal of the campaign at the 9:12 mark off a pass from fifth year midfielder Sam Lambert (Victor, N.Y./Victor). Sophomore attackman Olin Stanat (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) put the Dolphins in front with 7:50 left in the half with his fourth goal of the season after collecting a pass from junior attackman Joey Pezzimenti (Victor, N.Y./Victor/UAlbany).

Joseph Duchnowski evened the score at three apiece with 6:08 remaining with his 39th goal of the season.

Loun put the Dolphins back in front with 30.5 seconds left by catching the rebound of a saved shot and flicking it into the net from the edge of the crease.

After the Panthers called timeout with under six seconds left in the half and the ball behind the net, Brian Harinski beat the quarter buzzer for his 26th goal of the year after taking a pass from Duchnowski.

Adelphi took its final lead of the game just under five minutes into the third quarter as Dylan Barry finished off a pass from Hall.

Le Moyne took the lead for good with three straight goals. Following a possession-clock violation on the Panthers, Senior midfielder Blake Van Epps (Albany, N.Y./Albany Academy/Manhattan) tallied his sixth goal of the season with a blast from the left alley with 6:45 to go. Just over two minutes later, Loun registered his 20th goal of the season with a dodge down the left alley. Loun scored again 59 seconds later with a behind-the-back shot from the left side after taking a pass from behind the net from Stanat.

Only 34 seconds later, Jack Hipchen posted his 27th goal of the season to get the Panthers back within one.

Le Moyne regained its two-goal lead with 1:49 remaining in the quarter as graduate student attackman Kevin Sheehan (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) found the back of the net for the 21st time this season after receiving a pass from Benedict.

Sheehan opened the fourth quarter's scoring 1:23 into the period from the front of the crease off a feed from Stanat for Le Moyne's first three-goal lead of the game.

Duchnowski netted his 40th goal of the season with 12:06 remaining, but that would mark Adelphi's final goal of the game and season.

Lambert gave the Dolphins a three-goal lead again with his 12th goal of the campaign with 9:35 remaining. Following the first penalty of the game, Pezzimenti registered his 42nd goal of the season (tied for the ninth-best total in a season in the program's history) at the 6:51 mark off a dish from Sheehan, who earned his 50th career assist. With his two points in the game, Pezzimenti tied Ryan Spillett '03 from 2000 and Justin Kesselring '18 from 2018 for fifth on the program's single-season points list with 68 points.

Fifth year faceoff specialist Nico Mattia (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) went 14-of-21 at the faceoff dot and scooped up eight ground balls, which gives him 103 on the season to pass Sam Kury '22 from 2022 for the third-most in a season in the program's history. Over the last seven games, Mattia is winning faceoffs at a .682 clip (88-of-129).

Graduate student goalkeeper Matt Vavonese (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Canisius) registered 10 saves, including four in each of the first and second quarters, to earn his 17th victory of the season, tied with Jeff White '13 from 2012 for the fourth-most by a Dolphin in the program's history. Dylan Renner, the NE10 Goalkeeper of the Year, recorded nine saves in the loss.
