Syracuse, N.Y. – Heading into the bottom of the ninth inning during the Le Moyne baseball team's
NCAA Championship East Regional #2 title game against the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning on Sunday at the University of Delaware's Bob Hannah Stadium, the Dolphins were holding onto a 6-5 lead, and needed to get the final three outs to keep their season alive and secure a spot in the East Super Regional.
Senior right-hander
Jed Boyle (Syracuse, N.Y./Corcoran) was on the mound for the 'Phins looking to earn the save, and after catcher
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) threw out a Goldey-Beacom player trying to steal second base, Le Moyne had the bases cleared with two outs.
Kyle Walker came up big for the Lightning with a two-out double, bringing the potential game-winning run to the plate in cleanup hitter Marlon Lindsey Jr.
Lindsey Jr. fell behind in the count 1 and 2 before hitting a hard ground ball to the right of Le Moyne freshman
Lukas Egenhauser (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) at third base.
As the ball skipped quickly across the turf, the tying run sprinted towards third. If the ball got past Egenhauser, Walker would score, and the game-winning run would be on base.
Egenhauser tried to scoop the ball backhanded and was able to keep it in front of him, but he could not field it cleanly and the ball popped straight up above his head.
Le Moyne's rookie third baseman showed tremendous concentration and skill to grab the ball out of the air with his right hand, align his feet towards first and fire the ball across the diamond in time to record the final out of the game and secure Le Moyne's spot in the two-team East Super Regional.
Egenhauser's smooth play at the hot corner has been named the Le Moyne Play of the Week, presented by McNeil & Co.
After graduate first baseman
Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) caught the ball to record the putout, Egenhauser tossed his glove into the air as all 26 members of Le Moyne's roster sprinted onto the field to celebrate the victory and the program's first appearnace in the East Region title game since 2012.
The Dolphins, the third seed in the East Region, are ranked #26 in the most recent Collegiate Baseball DII Top 30 Poll and they will take on the no. 1 seed in the East Region, Southern New Hampshire University (#13 in Collegiate Baseball Poll, and #10 in the NCBWA Top 25 Poll) in a three-game series in Hooksett, N.H. on May 26 and 27 for a chance to win the East Region title and earn one of the eight spots in the NCAA DII baseball world series from June 3-10 in Cary, North Carolina, at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
The last time a Le Moyne baseball team claimed a region championship in the NCAA tournament was during the 1981 season.
