IONA SCORES LATE GOAL TO BEST WOMEN'S SOCCER, 1-0

New Rochelle, N.Y. – The Le Moyne women's soccer team nearly came away with a draw on the road against Iona on Thursday evening, but the Gaels scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute of the game to claim their first victory of the campaign by a score of 1-0.

The Dolphins prevented Iona from putting a shot on goal through the first 89 minutes and 45 seconds of Thursday's contest at Mazzella Field, then Iona senior forward Kate McNally dribbled into the left side of Le Moyne's penalty area and sent a pass across the box to an open Kedarjah Lewis, who placed a one-time shot into the bottom right side of the net to record the winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in the game.

The Dolphins recorded five shots during the game, including one from freshman forward Sofia Sanzo (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) that hit the top right corner of the goal frame before bouncing back into the field of play with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Sanzo's scoring chance was initiated by a throw in from junior defender Brooke Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) from the left sideline within Le Moyne's attacking third. The ball bounced over an Iona defender and towards Sanzo at the edge of the six-yard box in the left side of the penalty area.

Just before an Iona defender could clear it away, Sanzo, who made her collegiate debut during the match and played the full 90 minutes, extended her right leg and hit the ball out of the air towards the right side of the goal. Her shot hit the goal frame and bounced back to her, but the Iona defense and goalkeeper Savannah Rogers scrambled to clear the ball away.

In the 25th minute, Le Moyne junior forward Sierra Edwards (Greece, N.Y./Hilton/Monroe) drew a foul outside Iona's penalty area, in the right side of Le Moyne's attacking third. Sophomore midfielder Alaina Carro (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent/Wheeling) drove a shot on goal off the set piece for Le Moyne, but Rogers caught the ball to record the save.

With just over 27 minutes remaining in the game, Sanzo received the ball in the middle of Le Moyne's attacking third and sent a through ball to Edwards into the right side of the box, but Rogers came off her line and scooped up the pass just before Edwards could get a touch on it.

In the 78th minute, Edwards ran onto a long pass down the right wing from graduate midfielder Marissa Lisikatos (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane). Edwards tracked down the ball then faced up her defender just outside the 18-yard box before sending a pass to Sanzo in the middle of the field. The Iona defense recovered to thwart the opportunity and regain possession.

The Dolphins drop to 0-2 on the season, and will return to action on Sunday at Niagara.
