Binghamton, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis earned the College's first Northeast Conference victory with a 5-2 win over Binghamton University on Sunday afternoon at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the point in the doubles competition. Freshman
Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) and junior
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) earned the first victory of the day, 6-1, at the second spot over Abby Ackroyd and Maria Pereira. Sophomores
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) and
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) were leading 5-2 at the third position when the Binghamton duo of Caterina Casadei and Lara Kaplan retired. Natalia Aruj and Loren Cuomo prevented the Le Moyne sweep with a 6-1 win at the first spot over sophomore
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and graduate student
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil).
Le Moyne registered four wins in the six matches in the singles competition. Fernando collected her first career dual-match victory by edging Cuomo in the most competitive match of the day, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, at the second position. Barona recorded her 25th career singles victory, 6-2, 6-3, at the third spot over Casadei. Casares turned in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ackroyd at the fourth position. Senior
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) defeated Samantha Jaros, 6-3, 6-1, at the sixth spot for her 39th career victory, which ties Lilliegren for the fifth-most by a Dolphin over the last 20 years. Aruj claimed Binghamton's first point of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Simeonova at the first position, while Nitya Vyas was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at the fifth spot over Alvarez.
Le Moyne (1-0, 1-0 NEC), which also defeated the Bearcats 5-2 last year, is back in action on Sunday, October 1 at Niagara University.
