Box Score 3 Binghamton, N.Y. – Graduate student
Alvaro Nunez (Jerez De La Frontera, Spain/Southwest Baptist) finished in third place in singles action and went 4-0 in doubles to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team at Binghamton University's NateRentals.com Binghamton Championships Friday through Sunday at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center. They Dolphins combined to go 19-20 over the three days at the nine-team event.
Nunez went 2-1 in the "E" draw en route to third place. He opened with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Colgate's Benjamin Graham. After falling 6-4, 6-4 to Bucknell's Liam Kilmer in the semifinals, Nunez was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Army's Daniel Choi.
In the "I" draw, freshman
Yegor Boyev (London, England/Ashcroft Technology Academy) finished in third place. He was a 6-2, 6-4 winner in the first round over Siena's Elijah Zifferblatt. Following a 6-1, 6-1 setback to Army's Lucas Pak in the semifinals, he was leading 6-1 when Niagara's Rohan Srivastava retired due to injury.
In the "A" draw, junior
Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) went 2-1. He fell to Colgate's Josh Israel in the first round, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. In the consolation bracket, he defeated Binghamton's William Morais Binnie, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) and then claimed fifth place by rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win over Siena's Fabio Varella.
Graduate student
Luka Stojanovic (Paracin, Serbia/Kosta Cukic/University of Incarnate Word/Lipscomb) went 2-1 in the "B" draw. In the first round, he fell to Bucknell's Adamantios Stavrakas, 6-2, 6-0. He rebounded with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 win over Niagara's Trevor Masi and then topped Army's Vishnu Bodavula, 6-2, 6-2, for fifth place.
Graduate student
Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) dropped a pair of matches in the "D" draw. He fell to Buffalo's Yunhan Jiang in the first round, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, and then Vid Maric of Niagara posted a 6-3, 6-1 win in the consolation semis.
Graduate student
Leon Grundstroem (Hoganas, Sweden/Northwood) posted a 2-1 record in the "F" draw. In the first round, he fell to Binghamton's Andrew Fang, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. He advanced to the fifth-place match after Colgate's Tejas Gupta retired due to injury. He then claimed fifth place with a 6-7 (8-10), 6-1, 10-4 victory over Niagara's Bryce Bodak.
In the "H" draw, graduate student
Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense) went 1-2. He fell to Niagara's Roberto Vaca in the first round, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1. He advanced to the fifth-place match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Colgate's John Fazli, but then fell to Army's Preston Achter, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 10-8.
Junior
Xavier Branagan (Wollstonecraft, Australia/St. Aloysius' College) also went 1-2 in the "H" draw. William Robinson of Bucknell recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win in the first round. Achter was then a 6-0, 1-6, 10-4 in the consolation semifinals. Branagan was then a 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 winner over Fazli.
In the "Green" doubles draw, Hatton and Stojanovic went 2-2. They opened with a 6-0 loss to Binghamton's Binnie and Costa on Friday. They followed on Saturday with a 7-5 victory over Buffalo's Tang and Huang and a 6-4 setback to Buffalo's Malkin and MacNamara. They recorded a 7-6 (8) victory against Colgate's Israel and Vlassis on Sunday.
In the "Black" doubles draw, Boyev and Branagan went 1-3. They fell to Bucknell's Zelikovsky and Robinson on Friday, 6-4. On Saturday, they tallied a 6-3 win over Colgate's Fazli and Chung, but fell to Army's Pak and Achter, 6-2. On Sunday, they lost 6-3 against Army's Hanna and Zhou.
The Dolphins had a pair of teams in the "White" doubles draw as Nunez and Grundstroem went 4-0 and Piekarek and Beires were 0-4. Nunez and Grundstroem opened with a 6-4 win over Army's Rooney and Shalakov. They followed with a 6-2 victory over Army's Huarte and Choi and a 6-4 win over Binghamton's Weekes and Ajed on Saturday. They closed out the weekend with a 6-4 victory over Colgate's Weitz and Chung. Piekarek and Beires fell to Bucknell's Bain and Kilmer, 6-2, in the first round. On Saturday, they fell to Rooney and Shalakov, 6-2, and Huarte and Choi, 6-3. On Sunday, they fell to Weekes and Ajed, 6-3.
The Dolphins return to action at the ITA Northeast Regional #1, which will be held October 6-9 at the University of Pennsylvania's Hamlin & Hecht Tennis Centers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
