Schenectady, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team opened the 2023-24 year with 20 victories on Saturday afternoon at the Union Invitational at the Union Tennis Courts.
In the opening round of the day, the Dolphins claimed all three doubles matches and the lone singles match. Graduate student
Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) and sophomore
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) teamed for an 8-3 win over Chara Meidani and Gracie Nicol. Junior
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) and freshman
Ella Fernando (Manchester, England) were 8-2 winners over Claire Langille and Skylar Semon. Sophomores
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) and
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) also tallied an 8-2 win over Gabby Gatto and Paige Tromblee. In singles play, senior
Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) recorded an 8-4 victory over Sydney Alphabet.
The Dolphins again swept the three doubles matches and one singles match in the second round. Lilliegren and Fernando registered an 8-1 victory over Meidani and Nicol. Alvarez and Simeonova picked up an 8-5 win over Kennedy Alexis and Luisa Arizpe Sierra, while Barona and Pepper blanked Alphabet and Kate Hirnak. Casares defeated Tromblee, 8-1, in a singles match.
In round three, the Dolphins won six of the seven singles matches. Lilliegren claimed her 38th singles win as a Dolphin by sweeping Alphabet, 6-0. Alvarez and Barona were 6-1 winners over Tromblee and Nicol, respectively. Casares collected her 15th win as a Dolphin, 6-2, over Gatto, while Fernando earned her first singles win, 6-2, over Arizpe Sierra. Pepper was also a 6-2 winner over Semon. Meidani earned Union's first win of the day, 6-4, over Simeonova.
Le Moyne went 6-1 in singles action in the fourth (and final) round of the day. Alvarez and Pepper each recorded 6-1 victories over Hirnak and Langille, respectively. Lilliegren was a 6-2 winner over Alexis. Barona and Fernando each posted 6-3 wins over Meidani and Nicol, respectively. Casares won the tightest match of the day, 7-6 (7-4), against Semon. Arizpe Sierra clinched the second point for the Garnet Chargers, 6-2, over Simeonova.
The Dolphins are back in action on Sunday the 17th at Binghamton University.
