CHICAGO STATE TAKES DOWN VOLLEYBALL IN FIRST MATCHUP

Chicago, I.L.  – The Le Moyne College volleyball team traveled to Chicago to take on NEC newcomer Chicago State University on Friday evening. The Cougars swept the Dolphins in three sets, 25-14, 25-19, 26-24, sending Le Moyne to 2-15 overall and 1-4 in conference play this season.

The Dolphins came out strong in set one, taking three straight points and coming within one, 6-7, early in the set, but a five-point rally in the middle of the set put it out of reach. In set two, Le Moyne came back from a 17-9 deficit to come within two points of the lead, 18-20, but a service error and two straight kills by the Cougars gave them the advantage. Set three saw the Dolphins come together on both sides of the ball as they held eight different leads throughout with their latest at 23-22, but a service error and kill from Chicago State cemented the sweep, 26-24.

For Le Moyne, freshman outside hitter Jordyn Hamlin (Manahawkin, N.J. / Southern Regional) and junior middle hitter Kayla Anstett (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) tied for the team-lead in kills with six, while freshman outside hitters Denali Louden (Murrieta, C.A. / Murrieta Mesa) and Nina Salas (Austin, T.X. / McNeil) each notched another five in the match. Junior setter Haley Gerken (Buffalo, N.Y. / Frontier) led with 10 assists with freshman setter Skylar Jehlen (Rochester, N.Y. / Churchville-Chili) adding another nine, as well. On defense, Hamlin recorded eight digs while Louden, Gerken, and sophomore libero/DS Haley Buescher (Toledo, O.H. / St. Ursula Academy) tallied six each. Freshman middle hitter Anaya Rawlinson (Whitby, O.N. / Sinclair Secondary School) and sophomore opposite hitter Branwyn Lupton (Napanee, O.N. / Napanee District Secondary School) aided with six combined total blocks in the loss.

For Chicago State, Karly Klaer led with 12 assists while Patrycja Lagida contributed another 11. Also on offense, Wiktoria Zagumny put up a match-high 29 assists against the Dolphins. Defensively, Andrea Calderon tallied 15 digs while Julieta Sandez added six total blocks to the stat sheet.
