San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Le Moyne College women's basketball team suffered an 83-61 setback against UNC Greensboro on Friday in the team's first of two games at the Puerto Rico Clasico.
The Spartans shot 14-29 from three-point range, 13-13 from the line and tallied 42 bench points to improve to 7-2 on the season.
The Dolphins dished out a season-best 21 assists on Friday and outscored UNCG in the paint, 26-24. Le Moyne's 61 points also marks a new season-high for the team.
Senior forward
Brianna Williams (Brampton, Ontario/Southwest Academy/Hartford) led Le Moyne with a career-high 16 points on 6-9 shooting from the field and 4-4 from the line in addition to seven rebounds and a career-high five assists in her first start of the season. Junior guard
Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) shot 3-5 from three-point range in her season debut for the Dolphins, while senior guard
Mia Yanogacio (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep/Delaware) and graduate forward
Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) each added eight points.
Sophomore guard
Zhara Adeyemi (Brooklyn, N.Y./South Shore) also recorded career-highs in points (7) and assists (2), while freshman guard
Eli Clark (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) provided four assists and graduate guard
Megan Bodziony (Wakefield, R.I./St. Andrew's School/Fordham/Bryant) contributed six points, three assists and three rebounds.
UNCG senior guard Jayde Gamble tallied 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Spartans, while freshman guard Nya Smith added 15 points and four rebounds. The Spartans forced the Dolphins into 21 turnovers, and scored 24 points off of those turnovers.
Williams scored seven first-quarter points for Le Moyne, while Roberts and Yanogacio each added a three-pointer during the opening frame as the Dolphins trailed UNCG 15-13 after 10 minutes of action.
The Spartans shot 8-16 with three threes during the second quarter to outscore Le Moyne 23-14 in the period to take a 38-27 lead at halftime. UNCG began the second quarter on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to double-digits for the first time. Roberts drained a three at the 5:47 mark, Yanogacio did the same with 3:52 left in the half and Williams knocked down a jumper during Le Moyne's next possession to trim the team's deficit to 29-25.
The Spartans scored the next six points to extend their lead back to double digits. Yanogacio made two free throws with under 30 seconds remaining then UNCG sophomore guard Kelly Boyle made a three just before the buzzer to give the Spartans an 11-point lead at the intermission.
UNCG shot 7-7 from the free-throw line in the third to outscore the Dolphins 23-15 in the period and extend its lead to 61-42 heading into the fourth. Linnin converted two of her threes in the quarter.
Le Moyne shot 8-11 from the field in the fourth quarter, but the Spartans were able to hold them off with four more fourth-quarter threes to claim an 83-61 non-conference victory.
The Le Moyne College women's basketball team will conclude its trip to Puerto Rico with a 10:30 a.m. ET contest against Southern Indiana on Saturday.
