MEN’S BASKETBALL PICKS UP FIRST WIN, 107-73, OVER SUNY POLY



Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt junior forward Dwayne Koroma (Berlin, Germany/Bishop Walsh (Md.)/Iona/Salt Lake C.C./UT Arlington) scored 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 107-73 victory over SUNY Poly on Saturday night at Ted Grant Court.

Koroma led six Dolphins in double figures with 17 points, 11 of which came in the opening half, while finishing the game with a team-high six rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass./Belmont Hill School) posted 14 points, including 12 in the first half, in 13 minutes off the bench. Freshman forward Isaac Nyakundi (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East/The MacDuffie School (Mass.)) turned in 12 second-half points. Junior guard Zek Tekin (Istanbul, Turkey/Ozel Esenkent Okaynus Anadolu Lisesi/Siena) recorded 11 points, a team-high six assists, four rebounds and two steals. Fifth-year guard Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) and redshirt sophomore forward Nate Fouts (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles/Kimball Union Academy) each tallied 10 points, while Fouts tied Koroma for team-high honors with six rebounds.

Cheickne Toure led the Wildcats offensively with 16 points, 12 of which came in the second half. LaMarqus Merchant Jr tallied 10 of his 13 points after halftime, while finishing the contest with four rebounds and four assists. Anthony Rose also recorded 10 second-half points to finish with 12.

The Dolphins scored the first eight points of the game on three dunks and a lay-up by Koroma over the opening 2:08, while he followed a Toure jumper with another lay-up to account for Le Moyne's first 10 points.

Following a 5-4 edge by SUNY Poly over the next two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins scored 12 straight points to open up a 19-point margin with 10:43 left. Four Dolphins scored in the span, led by five points from Tekin.

After back-and-forth action over the next four minutes, Dylan Ernst and Daimarr Miller made back-to-back three-pointers to pull the Wildcats within 12 with 5:20 left in the half.

Le Moyne answered back with seven straight points on a four-point play by junior forward Freds Pauls Bagatskis (Riga, Latvia/Complejo Educativo Mas Camarena/Georgia Tech/UT Arlington) and a three-pointer by Jones Jr.

Following five points by SUNY Poly around a lay-up by Mosquera, the Dolphins rattled off nine straight points to take their largest lead of the half, 52-27, with 46 seconds left. Mosquera made a lay-up, sophomore guard AJ Dancler (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) had a fast-break lay-up and then Mosquera drilled a three-pointer and slammed home a fast-break dunk.

The Wildcats scored the final three points of the half to get within 52-30 at halftime.

After SUNY Poly scored the first five points of the second half, the Dolphins tallied the next 10. Jones Jr. hit a three-pointer, Koroma had two more dunks and then Fouts recorded a conventional three-point play for a 62-35 lead with 16:46 left.

After the teams exchanged points over the next three minutes, the Dolphins scored 15 of the next 18 points to open up their largest lead of the game at 38 points with 9:59 left. Fouts scored five points in the streak and freshman guard Jakob Blakley (Elgin, Ill./Walter Payton Preparatory) had four, while Dancler, Nyakundi and Mosquera each scored in the paint.

Following two free throws by Nyakundi with 7:42 left to put the Dolphins up 89-52, the Wildcats scored 10 straight points to cut their deficit to 27 with 6:42 left. Merchant Jr. had the first two points, Rose scored five in a row and then William Scanlon buried a three-pointer.

The Dolphins got points in the paint from redshirt sophomore guard Kaelin Thomas (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic), redshirt freshman guard Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) and Nyakundi to push its lead above 30 for good.

Nyakundi finished off his team's scoring with a three-pointer with 1:35 left, while the Wildcats scored the final three points of the game.

Le Moyne (1-2) returns to the hardwood on Wednesday at the two-time defending national champion University of Connecticut at 7:00 p.m. at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.
