MEN’S BASKETBALL CONCLUDES ROAD SWING WITH 66-50 LOSS AT NEC-LEADING MERRIMACK

North Andover, Mass. – Bryan Etumnu scored a career-high 15 points to lead Merrimack College to a 66-50 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Hammel Court.

Freshman guard AJ Dancler (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) was the only Dolphin to score in double figures with a career-high 14 points in 25 minutes off the bench. The 50 points are the fewest by the team this season.

Etumnu added seven rebounds and four blocks to his game-high point total, eight of which he scored in the first half. Adam Clark also tallied 15 points, 11 of which came in the second half, while adding six steals and five assists. Jordan Derkack, the leading scorer in the NEC, scored eight of his 13 points in the first half, while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Devon Savage posted 12 points, nine in the first half, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first five points and seven of the opening nine. Graduate student forward Luke Sutherland (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Siena/Bryant) had five points in the span for the Dolphins.

Merrimack answered with a 15-2 run to take a 17-9 lead with 10:44 to go in the first half. Etumnu tallied eight of the points in the span, while three others accounted for seven points.

Le Moyne regained the lead with 12 consecutive points over 4:08 to take the lead for the final time. Senior guard Darrick Jones Jr. (Richmond, Va./Oak Hill Academy/Towson) started the run with a three-pointer, Dancler made a jumper, graduate student guard Isaiah Salter (Charlotte, N.C./Central Cabarrus/American International/Adelphi) drilled a three-pointer to tie the score, redshirt freshman forward Nate Fouts (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles/Kimball Union Academy) converted a lay-up for the lead and then Jones Jr. scored at the basket.

After going 5:28 without a point, the Warriors scored eight straight in just 1:23 to take the lead back for good. Derkack split two free throws to end the drought and then Savage tied the score with a three-pointer with 4:25 to go. Samba Diallo put Merrimack in front with a free throw and then Derkack had a conventional three-point play with 3:53 remaining.

Following two free throws by graduate student guard Kaiyem Cleary (Manchester, England/Redemption Christian Academy (NY)/Florida Southern/Florida Southwestern/Ball State), the leading scorer in NEC play, the Warriors rattled off eight straight points and 10 of the final 12 of the half to take a 35-25 lead into the intermission. Derkack and Jordan McKoy made lay-ups and then Savage made a free throw and three-pointer on consecutive possessions. After Salter made a lay-up for the Dolphins, Derkack hit a pull-up jumper on the right baseline with one second left to close out the half's scoring.

After a basket from each team in the opening two minutes of the second half, Etumnu had a dunk and a three-pointer 1:37 apart to push Merrimack's lead to 15 for the first time.

Le Moyne countered with nine of the next 10 points to close within seven with 11:05 left. Dancler scored the first five points, sophomore guard Trent Mosquera (Brookline, Mass./Belmont Hill School) made a lay-up and then Fouts hit a floater in the paint.

After six points from each team over the next three minutes, the Warriors put the game away with 13 consecutive points over 4:11 and 17 of 19 to take their largest lead of the game, 66-44, with 2:58 left. Clark had five points in the run, McKoy and Savage each scored three points and Derkack, Diallo and Etumnu each had two.

Mosquera made two free throws and Dancler converted a pair of shots to close out the game's scoring.

Le Moyne (10-14, 5-5 NEC) returns to action at home for the first time in 19 days on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Central Connecticut State University, which shares first place in the NEC with Merrimack.
