MEN’S TENNIS REGISTERS 4-0 VICTORY OVER WAGNER

Staten Island, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team won its second straight match, 4-0, over Wagner College on Sunday night in Northeast Conference action at the College of Staten Island tennis courts.

"An amazing weekend for the men," said head coach Jeff Lonczak '03. "Saturday night against FDU the men got their first conference win. We secured the doubles point with solid effort across the board. Peter Hatton and Alvaro Nunez came through in the clutch with tough three-set victories. That set up Leon Grundstroem to finish things off with a terrific performance at #4.  It was Leon's most important victory as a Dolphin and really showed his mental toughness. Against Wagner, the men started sluggish in doubles but still were able to figure things out and capture the point. Luka Stojanovic was the first off court with a solid win at #2 singles. Leon moved up to the #3 slot and was able to continue where he left off on Saturday with just an overpowering performance. Peter clinched things with another gritty three-set win. Things are coming together nicely for the men and we're really focused for our rematch at home against our rival Binghamton."

The Dolphins opened the match by claiming the point in the doubles competition. At the first position, graduate students Alvaro Nunez (Jerez De La Frontera, Spain/IES Padre Luis Coloma/Southwest Baptist) and Leon Grundstroem (Hoganas, Sweden/Northwood) registered a 6-4 victory over Filippo Tonnicchi and Rodrigo Perez to remain unbeaten in dual matches. Junior Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) and graduate student Luka Stojanovic (Paracin, Serbia/Kosta Cukic/University of Incarnate Word/Lipscomb) improved to 3-0 in conference play with a 6-2 win at the second spot over Sebastian Dobson and Naseem Rahman. Aryan Gupta and Lucas Darling had a 5-2 lead over graduate students Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense) when the doubles point was clinched.

Stojanovic gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the match with back-to-back scores of 6-4 to defeat Perez at the second spot. Grundstroem followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Jordan Hunte at the third position. Hatton ran his win streak to four with a 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 victory over Tonnicchi at the top spot to clinch the match.

Dobson claimed the first set against Beires, 7-5, at the fourth position before the match was clinched. Junior Xavier Branagan (Wollstonecraft, Australia/St. Aloysius' College) won the first set against Gupta, 6-4, and was trailing 5-1 in the second set. Freshman Yegor Boyev (London, England/Ashcroft Technology Academy) and Darling were unable to start.

Le Moyne (5-3, 2-2 NEC) plays its first home match of the season on Friday against Binghamton University at 7:45 p.m. at Elevate Fitness in DeWitt.
