BASEBALL DEFEATS HOUSTON CHRISTIAN IN EXTRA INNINGS, 11-4

Houston, Texas – The Le Moyne College baseball team prevailed in an extra-inning battle in game two of their season-opening series at Houston Christian University on Saturday, tallying seven runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim an 11-4 victory and even the weekend series at 1-1.

The Dolphins and Huskies were supposed to play two games on Saturday, but due to the first half of the doubleheader going an extra three innings, game two was moved to Sunday. The two sides will now play two seven-inning games tomorrow, scheduled for 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. ET, to conclude the four-game series.

The Huskies won game one of the series on Friday by a score of 4-3 with the help of a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning.

"It's been a good first two days of the season," said Le Moyne head coach Scott Cassidy '98. "We've played some very good baseball and have done a lot of things well. Our starting pitching has been outstanding and our bullpen guys have done a great job. Our offense has put together solid at bats up and down the lineup and are making for tough outs. We hope to finish up this weekend with a strong performance tomorrow," Cassidy concluded.

Seven different Dolphins recorded a hit on Saturday, led by right fielder Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) who provided two singles to go along with two walks, a run scored and a run batted in.

Third baseman Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) delivered a game-high two runs batted in with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second and an RBI single in the top of the 10th that made it 5-4 in favor of the Dolphins and began Le Moyne's big inning. Sullivan scored a run later in that inning and also recorded a walk on the day.

Shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and left fielder Jason Boule (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy (Syracuse)) each contributed a hit and two runs scored to the Le Moyne cause.

Designated hitter/third baseman Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and catcher Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Fort Plain) both added an RBI.

Right-hander Jordan Goldmann (Encinitas, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy/Palomar College/Grossmont College) made his first start of the season for the Dolphins, allowing three runs with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.

Right-hander Kennen Smith (Poughquag, N.Y./Arlington) was credited with the victory after tossing 3.0 innings in relief, and Patchett got the final three outs in the 10th inning.

Left fielder William Jewell, infielder Dylan LaRue and first baseman Katcher Halligan each recorded two hits for the Huskies, while Jewell and right fielder Damian Ruiz both drove in a run.

Le Moyne struck first in the top of the second when left fielder Tyler Campbell (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, moved to third following a double down right field line from Nevins, and crossed the plate after Sullivan lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.

Patchett made it 2-0 when he drove in Nevins with single through the left side of the infield.

HCU got a run back in the bottom of the inning after catcher Luke Bard scored on a wild pitch.

Halligan and Bard recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but Goldmann retired the next three hitters with a strikeout and two fly outs to strand both runners on base and maintain Le Moyne's 2-1 lead.

The Huskies then put runners on first and third with one out in the fifth, but Goldmann got a ground ball to the left side, and Nevins and second baseman Lukas Egenhauser (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) spun a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 4-1 in the top of the sixth. First baseman Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill/UMass Lowell) led of the inning with a double, then he advanced to third on a passed ball. Boule drew a walk, and Roden scored on an error during the next at bat.

Patchett drew a walk to load the bases with one out, then Fureno was hit by a pitch to drive in Boule.

Halligan ripped a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth, but Goldmann retired the next three batters with a ground out and two fly outs to end his day's work.

The Huskies tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single from Jewell, a sacrifice fly from Ruiz, and an error by the Dolphins.

Houston Christian loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but Smith got a strikeout and a groundout to end the inning and prevent another walk-off victory for the Huskies.

HCU loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Smith got a fly out to left field to strand all three runners on base and set up Le Moyne's big inning in the tenth.

Boule got things started in the tenth with a leadoff single, then he advanced to third on a throwing error following a ground ball to the left side from Nevins, and scored the go-ahead run on a Sullivan single to right-center.

The 'Phins proceeded to bat around the order with the help of a single from Patchett, a bunt single from Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton), a walk from Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and a walk from Keneston, along with another error from HCU.

Patchett, who started all 56 games in right field but made just one pitching appearance in 2023, walked two batters in the bottom of the tenth, but got a three-pitch strikeout and a double play to secure the win for the 'Phins.
