Williamsville, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team won for the third time in four matches with a 4-3 victory over Niagara University on Sunday afternoon at the Village Glen Tennis Courts.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead by opening the match with a sweep of the doubles competition. At the first position, graduate students
Alvaro Nunez (Jerez De La Frontera, Spain/IES Padre Luis Coloma/Southwest Baptist) and
Leon Grundstroem (Hoganas, Sweden/Filborna Gymnasium/Northwood) defeated Tanner Bedard and Trevor Masi, 7-6 (7-5). Junior
Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) and graduate student
Luka Stojanovic (Paracin, Serbia/Kosta Cukic/University of Incarnate Word/Lipscomb) registered a 6-3 win at the second spot over Manuel Alonso and Gurustat Makkar. Graduate students
Kacper Piekarek (Wroclaw, Poland/Autorskrie Licea Artystyczne Akademickie/Missouri-Kansas City) and
Rodrigo Beires (Porto, Portugal/Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta/Universidade Portucalense) were also 6-3 winners at the third position over Vid Maric and Jose Garcia.
Le Moyne won three of the six matches in the singles competition to claim the victory. Nunez improved to 8-1 in dual matches with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win at the third position over Garcia. Grundstroem rallied at the fourth spot against Alonso for a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory. Piekarek also claimed a three-set win, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, over Makkar at the fifth position. Bedard recorded back-to-back 6-4 wins over Hatton at the top spot. Maric was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at the second position over Stojanovic. Roberto Vaca won at the sixth spot over junior
Xavier Branagan (Wollstonecraft, Australia/St. Aloysius' College), 6-4, 6-4.
Le Moyne (6-4) is back on the courts on Wednesday at the University at Buffalo at 1:00 p.m.
