WOMEN’S TENNIS DOWNS MERRIMACK, 4-2, ON “SENIOR DAY”

DeWitt, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team registered a 4-2 victory over Merrimack College in Northeast Conference action on Sunday morning at Elevate Fitness.

The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the match by claiming the point in the doubles competition. The tandem of senior Fiona Pepper (Challapampa, Peru/Colegio Anglo Americano Prescott) and graduate student Francesca Lilliegren (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Alemán Humboldt Guayaquil) cruised to a 6-0 victory at the third position over Giulia Cavalcante and Kenzie Legg. Freshman Lilia Raiss (Temara, Morocco/Descartes) and sophomore Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) clinched the point with a 6-3 win over Nikala Tuffanelli and Dzhastina Mikhnova at the top spot. Caitlin McLoughlin and Jordan Philips won at the second position, 6-4, over freshman Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) and junior Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta).
 
Le Moyne closed out the win with three victories in the singles competition. Raiss was leading 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 3-0 at the top spot when Tuffanelli had to retire due to injury. Mikhnova pulled the Warriors within 2-1 with a 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 win at the second position over sophomore Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey). McLoughlin evened the match at two apiece by topping sophomore Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) at the third spot, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. The Dolphins regained the lead as Simeonova was leading at the fifth position, 6-0, when Cavalcante had to retire due to injury. Barona clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the fourth spot over Philips. Pepper, who was honored prior to the match for her contributions to the program, was leading Legg, 6-0, 1-2, at the sixth position when the match was clinched.
 
Le Moyne (5-8, 3-2 NEC) is home again on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against Stonehill College.
