BASEBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE WITH 10-9 WIN ON SATURDAY

Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College baseball team completed a sweep of conference foe University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday afternoon with a 10-9 victory over the Hawks at Dick Rockwell Field.

The Dolphins won both games of a doubleheader against UMES on Friday by scores of 8-4 and 20-8.

"The guys got it done today," said Le Moyne head coach Scott Cassidy '98. "We didn't play our best baseball but at the end, we walked away with a series sweep. Great starting pitching all weekend and the offense was outstanding. I'm really proud of how these guys grind every day. We'll enjoy these wins but now have to turn our focus to Niagara on Tuesday."

With the sweep, Le Moyne improves to 9-1 at home and 12-14 against NEC opponents.

Right-handed starting pitcher Jordan Goldmann (Encinitas, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy/Palomar College/Grossmont College) collected his fifth conference win of the season after limiting the Hawks to five runs and one walk with six strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work.

Right-handed reliever Billy Hoffacker (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek/Rowan College of South Jersey) got the final three outs for the Dolphins.

Center fielder Zach Brush (New York Mills, N.Y./Utica Notre Dame) drew a career-high five walks during the win, which ties a program record.

Shortstop Nick Nevins (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) and designated hitter Brady Fureno (Canajoharie, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) both provided a hit, two walks, two RBIs and a run scored during the conference win, while right fielder Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) launched his team-leading eighth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Third baseman Brody Keneston (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) added two hits, two runs, a walk and an RBI, while left fielder Adam Sullivan (Syracuse, N.Y./Marcellus) and second baseman Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) provided two hits and a run scored each.

UMES jumped ahead early in game three with a three-run home run from catcher Doyle McNew in the top of the first inning, but the Dolphins responded with six runs in the bottom of the second.

First baseman Dewey Roden (Sherrill, N.Y./Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Le Moyne's first run of the game, then Nevins drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the contest at 2-2.

Fureno then put the Dolphins in front with a two-RBI base hit to right-center field, Sullivan followed that up with an RBI single to right field, and drew a walk with the bases loaded to make it 6-3 in favor of the Dolphins.

UMES junior right-hander Brandon Gomez entered the game to get the final out of the second inning, then he held the Dolphins scoreless during the third, fourth and fifth frames, and designated hitter Derrick Mayes II, who went 4-for-4 during the contest, lifted a solo home run over the right field wall in the top of the fifth to make it a two-run game.

Patchett's two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth extended Le Moyne's lead to 8-4, then Nevins drove in Brush with a single to right field in the seventh inning. Both teams scored a run in the eighth, making it 10-5 going into the final inning.

Maryland Eastern Shore, which scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning in game one of the series, did the same in the finale, and was able to put the tying run on third base.

A two-RBI double from first baseman Bronson Taylor trimmed the Hawks deficit to three runs, then Mayes ripped a single to center field to drive in a run and make it 10-8 in favor of the Dolphins with one out in the inning. With runners on first and third, McNew hit a high chopper to the left side of the infield which allowed Taylor to cross the plate and make it a one-run game.

Mayes advanced to third on a fielding error during the next at bat, but Hoffacker was able to get a swinging strikeout to strand the tying run at third and complete the series sweep for the Dolphins.

The Le Moyne baseball team will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game at Niagara University, then the Dolphins will host the Merrimack College Warriors for a three-game Northeast Conference series at Dick Rockwell Field beginning on Friday, May 10 at 3 p.m.
