Box Score 2 Youngstown, Ohio – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team opened the year by going 10-16 at the YSU Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
In the "A" draw, top-seeded
Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) was upset in the quarterfinals by eighth-seeded Ansh Shah of Case Western Reserve University, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6. Hatton later dropped a consolation match to Duquesne University's Alfrendo Vogelaar, the fifth seed, 6-4, 3-6, 10-2.
Freshman
Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School), the 11th seed, knocked off sixth-seeded Will Rassat of Youngstown State in the first round, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8. He suffered a 6-3, 6-2 loss in the quarterfinals to Case Western Reserve's Ajay Mahenthiran, the third seed.
Graduate student
Bernardo Teixeira (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundária Fontes Pereira de Mel/University of Porto/Delaware), the 12th seed, upset Vogelaar in the first round, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 10-7. He was trailing fourth-seeded Filip Avdeev of Youngstown State, 3-2, in the quarterfinals when he had to retire.
In the "B" draw, junior
Adrian Daniel (Tel Aviv, Israel/Montana State), the seventh seed, won his Dolphin debut, 6-3, 6-2, over Youngstown State's Alex Woiten, the 10th seed. He fell to Case Western Reserve's Anmay Devaraj in the round of eight, 3-6, 6-0, 10-5.
Ninth-seeded
Xavier Branagan (Wollstonecraft, Australia/St. Aloysius' College) fell to Duquesne's Arnau Anton, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round.
Freshman
Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy), the 12th seed, won his first collegiate match with a 6-1, 7-5 upset of over Duquesne's Tancredi Alfano, the fifth seed, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, he fell to Case Western Reserve's George Kosseifi, the fourth seed. He was trailing Duquesne's Pierce Manning, the seventh seed in the "C" draw, 4-1, when he had to retire.
In the "C" draw, freshman
Navya Verma (Patiala, India), the fifth seed, registered back-to-back scores of 6-4 to upset fourth seed Ben Martin of Case Western Reserve in the quarterfinals in his collegiate debut. He was upended by top-seeded Rowan Matorin of Case Western Reserve in the semifinals, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
Freshman
Jacob Maravillas (Bergenfield, N.J./Homeschooled), the sixth seed, tallied a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory in his collegiate debut over Teo Papadopoulos of Duquesne in the first round. Takamasa Mishiro of Youngstown State downed him in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Sophomore
Yegor Boyev (London, England/Ashcroft Technology Academy), the eighth seed, advanced to the quarterfinals by walkover. He fell in the quarterfinals to Matorin by consecutive scores of 6-1. Case Western Reserve's Ben Martin topped Boyev in a consolation match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
In the doubles draw, the second-seeded duo of Hatton and Teixeira registered an 8-4 win over 15th-seeded Alfano and Aril Tuna of Duquesne in the first round. They were then 8-2 winners in the quarterfinals over Case Western Reserve's Kosseifi and Santiago Garza, the seventh seed.
Bortolaso and Maravillas, the 11th seed, were edged in the first round by Case Western Reserve's Mahenthiran and Casey Hishinuma, the sixth seed, 8-7 (7-2). They bounced back with an 8-5 win in a consolation match over Duquesne's Pierce Manning and Teo Papadopoulos, the 14th seed.
Fourth-seeded Devaraj and Shah of Case Western Reserve downed 13th-seeded Daniel and Hoyland in the first round, 8-2. They turned in an 8-5 victory in a consolation match over Duquesne's Vogelaar and Keita Duclos, the fifth seed.
Boyev and Verma, the 16th seed, were defeated by the top-seeded Youngstown State duo of Onder Balci and Viktor Craenenbroeck, 8-1. They were edged in a consolation match by Matorin and Rohan Bhat of Case Western Reserve, 8-6.
The Dolphins are back in action Friday through Sunday at the Naterentals.com NEC Invitational hosted by Binghamton University at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center.
