St. Bonaventure, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team registered a 1-1 draw at St. Bonaventure University on Wednesday night.
The Dolphins took a 1-0 lead against the Bonnies in the 56
th minute when redshirt-junior midfielder
Ziad Abdul-Malak (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) hit the back of the net for the second consecutive match after receiving a pass from graduate forward
Noah Sperduto (Elmira, N.Y./Elmira), who recorded his first assist of the season on the play.
SBU found the equalizer with six minutes remaining in the second half, as senior forward Andres Javitt scored his second goal of the season, to salvage a draw at home. St. Bonaventure outshot Le Moyne 14-4 during the match, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 11-0.
Le Moyne sophomore goalkeeper
Wyatt Dupell (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) came up with four saves as the Dolphins extended their unbeaten streak to four games.
"I thought it was a tough away match for us against a good A-10 opponent," said Le Moyne head coach
Callum Donnelly '17, M '21. "We are disappointed to lose the late goal, and I think we can defend it better, but credit to St Bonaventure for scoring in a spell where they had a lot of pressure.
"We weren't at our best tonight, but we've got something out of the game which is pleasing for the group when we are not playing at our best. We will learn a lot from this evening and look forward to Saturday back at home," said Donnelly.
The Dolphins took their first shot on goal in the fourth minute of the match when freshman forward
Rhys Allport (Wirral, England/Reaseheath) received a pass on the left wing, then cut into the penalty area and hit a right-footed shot that was caught by SBU goalkeeper Nicolas Pucci.
Dupell recorded his first save of the match in the 21
st minute on a free kick taken by graduate midfielder Mo Tall. Tall's shot was driven towards the right side of the net, but Dupell dove and knocked the ball out of bounds for an SBU corner kick.
Sperduto nearly scored his first goal of the season with just over five minutes remaining in the first half when he finished off a rebound opportunity following an Allport shot from outside the 18-yard box that required Pucci to make a diving effort to his right, but Sperduto was ruled offsides to negate the goal.
SBU recorded two shots in the final five minutes of the first half, but the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes.
With just over 42 minutes remaining in the second half, SBU senior forward Rashid Aroza ran onto a long ball into the Le Moyne penalty area, and tapped a right-footed shot that hit the right post. The ball remained in play, but the Le Moyne defense recovered to prevent another shot from Aroza.
The Dolphins broke the tie in the 56
th minute. Junior midfielder
Bryce Koagel (West Monroe, N.Y./Paul V. Moore/Medaille) carried the ball into Le Moyne's attacking third and sent a pass down the right wing for Sperduto. Sperduto chased down the ball and with his first touch sent a pass back to the middle of the field for Abdul-Malak.
Abdul-Malak beat an SBU player to the ball, took a touch into the penalty area, took another touch to his right to evade a Bonnies defender, then ripped a right-footed shot that beat the goalkeeper at the near post and hit the right side of the net. The goal was Abdul-Malak's second of the season, and his second in the last two games.
Abdul-Malak's goal would be the Dolphins' final shot of the contest.
Dupell came up with his fourth and final save of the match in the 81
st minute. Following an SBU corner kick, with a crowd of players in the Le Moyne penalty area, St. Bonaventure defender Luc Finelli lofted a ball towards the edge of the six yard box, where senior forward Umechi Akuazaoku sent a header towards the left side of the goal. Dupell flew to his right and caught the shot to maintain Le Moyne's 1-0 lead.
With just over six minutes remaining in the match, SBU redshirt-junior defender Mattia Ferretti received the ball in front of the St. Bonaventure bench and sent a ball in the air to the edge of the Le Moyne six-yard box. Dupell contested the initial header from Akuazaoku, but the ball fell in front of Javitt, who hit a right-footed shot into the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Le Moyne's back line of
Vito Kreuzpaintner,
Cameron Stuart,
Michael Krzeminski,
Maximilian Huss and
Victor Boje Henriksen, along with Abdul-Malak, each played the full 90 minutes. Krzeminski made his first career start during the match.
Le Moyne (3-1-2) will return to action on Saturday when they host Niagara University at Ted Grant Field for a 1:30 p.m. non-conference match.
"We have grown a lot in the first few games of this season," Donnelly added after the match. "We will get better and continue to improve in all aspects. I am pleased so far with the application from the group and their maturity is growing in each game we play."
The Dolphins will begin Northeast Conference play at home on September 29 against the FDU Knights.
St. Bonaventure moved to 2-4-1 following Wednesday's draw, and will begin Atlantic 10 Conference play on Saturday against Fordham.
