Syracuse, N.Y. - The Le Moyne College women's soccer team were defeated in its matchup against Temple University on Thursday.
Le Moyne looked to build off their momentum from the previous game against Iona. The Dolphins would make just one change to their starting lineup, which saw senior midfielder
Gabirella Sylstra (Little Falls, N.Y./Little Falls/Richard Bland/Old Dominion) make a return to the starting XI.
Temple set up in a 5-3-2 formation, a different formation than what the 'Phins have played in previous games, making it apparent that the wanted to play their wing-backs in behind the defense of Le Moyne. Right out of the gates, Temple were caught offside twice within the first two minutes of action. The Owls would be called offside a total of nine times in the first half alone. The back line of graduate student midfielder/defender
Jenicah Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland/Cazenovia), redshirt freshman center back
Logan Cookinham (Poland, N.Y./Poland), senior defender
Katelyn Courcy (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and freshman outside back
Mallory Pietrzak (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield) had their work cut out for them.
The Owls would score their first goal of the game in the 14th minute, after graduate student midfielder Yao Zhou played a ball over the top of the Dolphin back line, into the feet of sophomore forward Sharl Atkins, placing the ball in the bottom left corner to give Temple a 1-0 lead. The 'Phins created two chances following the goal, the first shot coming from senior midfielder
Danielle Casey (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), firing a shot that was saved by the outstretched hand of the Temple keeper. On the ensuing corner, junior defender/midfielder
Jasmina Barhoumi (Worms, Germany/Nelly-Sachs-IGS/D'Youville) whipped in an in-swinging cross, making its way on target and needing to be punched away by the Owls keeper. Neither team would create a real chance on goal for the rest of the 1st half.
Le Moyne would start the second half the strong, earning two corners and looking to find their equalizer. Sophomore midfielder
Giovanna Vigliotti (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) had the first shot of the half for the Dolphins, although off target. Just four minutes later, freshman midfielder/forward
Sara Ullman (Washington, D.C./Bethesda-Chevy Chase)Â had the best chance of the game for the 'Phins off a shot with her right that was easily saved by sophomore goalkeeper Tamsin Bynoe.
Temple scored their second goal of the game in the 60th minute of action off of a cross off the fingertips of freshman goalkeeper
Simone Schwarz-Eise (Scottsdale, A.Z./Averill Park), and tapped in at the back post by junior midfielder Fiona Killan. Nine minutes later, the Owls added their third goal of the game off a cross that was deflected off the crossbar by Schwarz-Eise and headed in by freshman midfielder Raquel Patalon. Temple found a fourth goal with ten minutes remaining in the game, as sophomore midfielder Caroline Oestergaard curled a shot to the far post, again off the fingertips of Schwarz-Eise, off the post and into the back of the net. The Dolphins were not able to register a shot in the final 10 minutes of action.
Le Moyne concluded its home stretch and will be on the road Monday as they head to Stony Brook. Action is set to kick-off at 2:00 P.M.
