Hamilton, N.Y. – Freshman
Carlo Zucchini (Varese, Italy/European School of Varese) won a singles draw and teamed to win a doubles draw to lead the Le Moyne College men's tennis team at the Colgate Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at the J.W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts.
Zucchini opened action in the "A" singles draw with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Witt Bulger of Colgate. He followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Colgate's Jerome Falcon in the semifinals. In the final match, he was leading Colgate's Aidan Lee, 6-4, 1-0, when Lee retired.
In the "A" doubles draw, Zucchini and sophomore
Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School) downed Colgate's Falcon and Parker McGowan in the opening match, 6-1. They then defeated Siena University's Koliadynskyi and Bruno Varella, 7-5, in the semifinals. In the final, they recorded a 6-3 win over junior
Emmanuel Cottle (Toronto, Ontario/Ontario Virtual School/Alcorn State) and senior
Adrian Daniel (Tel Aviv, Israel/Tichonet/Montana State).
Cottle and Daniel advanced to the final with a 6-2 win over Colgate's John Fazli and Lee in the first round and Siena's Santiago Trujillo and Emilio Zavala Salinas, 7-5, in the semifinal.
Cottle went 2-1 in the "A" singles draw. He fell to Siena's Koliadynskyi, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8, in the first round. He then defeated Witt Bulger of Colgate in the consolation bracket, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 10-3. He closed out the weekend with a 6-0, 4-6, 10-5 win over Bryant's Matteo Castellazzi.
Sophomore
Callum Matthew (Dorset, England/Highcliffe School) swept his competition to win the "C" draw. He opened with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Colgate's Fazli. He then defeated classmate
Jacob Maravillas (Bergenfield, N.J./Homeschooled), 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinal. He won the draw with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory over Trujillo in the final.
In the "B" doubles draw, sophomore
Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi) and Maravillas went 2-1. After falling to Colgate's Wesley Nichols and Tim Vargas in the first round, 6-4, they posted a 7-5 win over Colgate's Bulger and Aidan Chung and a 6-3 victory over Colgate's Fazli and Adam Fink.
Maravillas registered a pair of singles wins around his setback to Matthew. He opened play with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Siena's Zavala Salinas. He closed the weekend with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Colgate's Nichols.
Bortolaso also tallied two singles victories. He fell to Nichols in the opening round of the "C" draw, 6-4, 6-2. He answered back with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Colgate's Nolan Bohan and capped the invitational by rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-3 victory over Colgate's Fink.
The Dolphins return to action in the Spring semester with their dual match schedule.
