MEN’S BASKETBALL RECORDS FIRST WIN OVER NIAGARA, 74-68

Syracuse, N.Y. – Graduate student forward Shilo Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Vincennes/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) recorded a double-double to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 74-68 victory over Niagara University on Monday night at Ted Grant Court.

Jackson tallied a game high-tying 17 points, including 12 in the second half, and grabbed 11 rebounds, including eight in the second half, for his second double-double of the season. Redshirt sophomore guard Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) also posted 17 points, 10 of which came in the first half, to go with six rebounds. Sophomore guards Jakai Sanders (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy/Saint Peter's) and Jakob Blakley (Elgin, Ill./Walter Payton Preparatory) each registered 14 points, while Sanders had a career-best six assists and pulled down five rebounds, while Blakley grabbed three rebounds.

Vice Zanki led the Purple Eagles with 16 points off the bench, including 11 in the second half. Reggie Prudhomme scored nine of his 15 points in the first half on 3-of-3 shooting from three-point range, while adding eight rebounds. Justin Hawkins turned in 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

The Dolphins jumped out to an 8-3 lead through the first two minutes after a lay-up by Jackson and back-to-back three-pointers by Garang.

The Purple Eagles closed within one, but then Blakley drained consecutive three-pointers and Garang hit another for a 17-7 advantage with 14:12 to go in the half.

Niagara scored 13 of the next 17 points to get within 21-20 with 9:08 left. Trenton Walters started the run with a three-pointer, Prudhomme hit a pair of trifectas and Zanki and Will Shortt each scored two points.

The Purple Knights took their first lead of the game, 25-24, on a three-pointer by Zanki with 5:02 remaining.

The teams traded the lead five times over the next two minutes before Justin Page knotted the score with 1:05 left at 32, which ended up as the halftime score.

After Niagara scored the first four points of the second half, the Dolphins rattled off a 15-3 run to force a Niagara timeout with 13:04 remaining. Sanders and Garang made three-pointers, Jackson made a lay-up, Blakley drilled another three-pointer, Garang made two free throws and then Jackson hit a jumper in the paint for a 47-39 lead.

The Purple Eagles countered with 11 of the next 15 points to close within 51-50 with 9:29 to go. Drew Larson made a three-pointer and then Zanki hit a jumper and a pair of three-pointers.

Le Moyne responded with 12 of the next 13 points to take its largest lead of the game, 63-51, with 4:15 left. Redshirt junior guard Trent Mosquera (Boston, Mass./Belmont Hill School) made three free throws, Jackson followed with two of his own and then Sanders made a lay-up to force a Niagara timeout. After a Niagara free throw, Blakley made a three-pointer and Sanders connected on two foul shots.

The Purple Eagles made its last push with 11 straight points to get back within one with 1:39 to play. Hawkins made a lay-up, Zanki buried a three-pointer, Hawkins made two foul shots, Page drilled a three-pointer and then Walters made a foul shot.

Jackson answered with a jumper and then Sanders had a conventional three-point play with 22 seconds left to push Le Moyne's lead to six, 68-62.

The Dolphins went 6-of-6 from the foul line in the final 15 seconds to close out the victory.

Le Moyne (2-3), which defeated the Purple Eagles for the first time in nine all-time meetings, is home again on Saturday against another MAAC opponent, Fairfield University, at 1:00 p.m.
