MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON WITH 94-50 WIN OVER SUNY COBLESKILL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore guard Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) scored 16 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 94-50 season-opening win over SUNY Cobleskill on Monday night at Ted Grant Court.

Garang tallied 11 of his game-high point total in the second half, while finishing the game with five rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Tennessee Rainwater (Davenport, Wash./Davenport/Utah Tech) registered 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field in his Dolphin debut. Freshmen guard Eli Greenberg (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) and Josiah Lee (Snohomish, Wash./Glacier Peak) each posted 12 points off the bench in their collegiate debuts, while Greenberg had three assists and two steals and Lee grabbed four rebounds.

Bruce Wilder Jr. led SUNY Cobleskill in the setback with 12 points, three assists and three rebounds. Marquay Tanksley recorded 11 points and six rebounds.

The Dolphins jumped out to an 8-2 lead through the first three minutes, led by back-to-back dunks from redshirt senior Shilo Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Vincennes/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi).

After Cobleskill pulled within 11-9 on a lay-up by Tanksley with 14:37 left, the Dolphins scored 13 straight points and 19 of the next 21 over seven minutes. Greenberg led five scorers in the run with seven points, while sophomore guard Jakai Sanders (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy/Saint Peter's) and Garang each had three points.

Following back-and-forth action over the next seven minutes, Sanders closed out the half's scoring with a traditional three-point play to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the half, 40-20.

After the teams split the first 12 points of the second half over the initial two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins pushed their lead to 30 for the first time with 14:15 left with 14 of the next 18 points. Garang had seven of the points around four from Jackson before Rainwater had an and-one alley-oop dunk off a feed from Garang.

Following a three-pointer by Wilder Jr to get the Fighting Tigers' deficit under 30 for the final time with 12:27 left, the Dolphins rattled off 18 of the next 23 points for an 84-42 lead with 6:11 left. Redshirt sophomore forward Trevor Roe (Syracuse, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Radford) led the charge with seven points, while Greenberg had five points.

The Fighting Tigers pulled back within 37 on another Wilder Jr. three-pointer with 4:05 left, but the Dolphins closed the game with 10 of the last 13 points, four of which came from Lee.

Le Moyne, which opened the season at home for the first time since the 2010-11 season (head coach Nate Champion's freshman year), returns to action on Thursday at fellow Jesuit institution  Xavier University at 7:00 p.m.
