Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Donald Hand Jr. recorded 26 points to lead Boston College to a 72-64 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum.
Graduate student forward
Shilo Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Vincennes/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) led the Dolphins in the setback with his seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and a career high-tying 15 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard
Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) posted 14 points, seven rebounds and a career-best three blocks. Redshirt junior guard
Trent Mosquera (Boston, Mass./Belmont Hill School) turned in 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Junior guard
Tennessee Rainwater (Davenport, Wash./Davenport/Utah Tech) registered 12 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Hand Jr. registered 18 of his game-high point total in the second half, while adding seven rebounds and two steals. Fred Payne tallied a career-high 22 points, including 15 in the first half, and also grabbed seven rebounds. Boden Kapke led the Eagles with 11 rebounds.
The Eagles jumped out to a 9-2 lead through the opening 4:05. Hand Jr. had the first five points and Payne followed with the next four.
Following back-to-back three-pointers by Payne around a Garang three-pointer for a 15-9 Boston College lead, Le Moyne scored nine straight points to take its first lead of the game. Jackson had two baskets in the paint, Rainwater drilled a three-pointer for the lead and then Jackson scored again in the paint.
Boston College regained the lead with the next six points, the first five of which came from Payne to cap his run of 15 straight Boston College points.
Le Moyne answered with six of the next eight points, the last four from Jackson, to take the lead back, 24-23, with 5:37 left in the half.
Following a free throw by Jackson with 3:47 left to tie the score at 25, the Eagles scored five of the next seven points. Hand Jr. made a three-pointer and then Jason Asemota countered a Garang lay-up by making two foul shots.
Garang had a fast-break lay-up with 38 seconds left to deliver the halftime score of 30-29 in favor of the Eagles.
After alternating points to open the second half, which resulted in a tie at 34 with 17:45 left, Boston College scored seven straight points for its largest lead of the game until the final minute. Jayden Hastings and Hand Jr. made lay-ups and then Payne drilled a three-pointer.
Le Moyne responded with a 16-5 run to take its largest lead of the game. Mosquera ignited the run with his first three-pointer of the game, Garang made a free throw and then Rainwater drained a three-pointer to even the score at 43. After the Eagles regained the lead with a three-pointer, Rainwater made a lay-up, Jackson scored in the paint, Garang hit two free throws for the lead and then Mosquera buried another three-pointer for a 52-48 advantage with 9:11 to play.
After Mosquera made it 54-50 with 8:36 remaining, the Eagles rattled off 10 of the next 11 points to take the lead for good. Hand Jr. made two free throws and a three-pointer around a Rainwater free throw to tie the score at 55, Kapke had a dunk for the lead and then Payne drilled a three-pointer in transition to force a Le Moyne timeout.
Rainwater buried another three-pointer out of the timeout to get the Dolphins within two, but Boston College countered with the next six points for its first eight-point lead. Hand Jr. made a jumper, Hastings had a lay-up and then Chase Forte converted a fast-break lay-up off a steal to force another Le Moyne timeout with 2:33 left.
After one and one-half minutes of scoreless play, Payne pushed the BC lead to a game-high nine with a free throw with 1:05 to go.
Sophomore guard
Jakai Sanders (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy/Saint Peter's) snapped Le Moyne's scoring drought of 4:16 with a conventional three-point play with 51 seconds left.
Following two missed free throws by Payne, Mosquera drew a foul shooting a three-pointer and knocked down all three free throws to get the Dolphins within 67-64 with 32 seconds left.
The Eagles went 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final 31 seconds around three Le Moyne missed field goal attempts to close out the game's scoring.
Le Moyne (5-8) opens NEC action on Friday at Saint Francis University at 7:00 p.m.
