MEN’S BASKETBALL EDGES WAGNER IN OVERTIME, 72-68

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore guard AJ Dancler (Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) scored eight of the team's 10 points in overtime as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team defeated Wagner College, 72-68, on Thursday night in Northeast Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Dancler finished the night with a game-high 17 points, all of which came after halftime, while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Redshirt freshman guard Deng Garang (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Grimes) tallied a career-high 15 points, which included a career-best three three-pointers, while adding two assists and two steals. Graduate student guard Robby Carmody (Mars, Pa./Mars Area/Notre Dame/Mercer) recorded 13 points, two blocks and two steals. Graduate student guard Will Amica (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/UAlbany) posted 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.

RJ Greene led the Seahawks in the loss with 15 points and seven rebounds. Zae Blake posted 14 points and four rebounds. Ja'Kair Sanchez turned in 12 points, while Zaire Williams netted 10 points, including an overtime-forcing three-pointer at the buzzer, to go with eight rebounds.

The Seahawks tallied 12 of the game's first 18 points over the initial 7:37. Sanchez had six of the points and Williams had four.

Le Moyne countered with a 22-4 run over the next 11 and one-half minutes to take a 28-16 lead. Amica started the run with a jumper, later added a three-pointer for a 16-14 lead (the only lead change of the game) and then capped the streak with a conventional three-point play. Five other Dolphins scored in the span, led by five points from Carmody.

Javier Ezquerra hit a jumper with 26 seconds left to pull the Seahawks within 28-18 at the intermission.

The teams traded points over the opening six and one-half minutes of the second half as Le Moyne's lead bounced between seven and 11 points.

After a three-point play by Greene with 13:23 left to pull Wagner within 39-31, senior forward Ocypher Owens (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian Prep/Indian River State) knocked down a jumper and Garang buried a three-pointer from the right corner to give the Dolphins their largest lead of the game, 44-31, with 12:20 left and force a Wagner timeout.

Following a jumper by Dancler to beat the shot clock and give the Dolphins their last 11-point lead of the game with 11:08, Wagner scored nine of the next 12 points to close within five, 51-46, with 6:22 to play. Blake scored seven of the nine points in the span for the Seahawks.

The Dolphins pushed their lead back to 10 with 4:41 left on another corner three-pointer by Garang and a three-point play by Amica around a Wagner free throw.

Following a free throw by Dancler with 2:43 left to give the Dolphins a 58-50 lead, Blake had a tip-in and Greene made a lay-up to get the Seahawks within four with 1:13 to go.

Carmody answered with a jumper with 53 seconds left to extend the margin back to six, but Ezquerra countered with a three-pointer 11 seconds later to cut Wagner's deficit in half.

The Dolphins misfired on a shot at the end of the shot clock on their next possession, but were able to corral the rebound. However, Ezquerra was able to pick off a pass from the baseline and fed Blake for a fast-break lay-up to cut the margin to one with four seconds left.

Carmody drew a foul with 3.6 seconds remaining and made the ensuing two free throws to put the Dolphins up 62-59.

After Le Moyne called timeout to set up its defense, Owens intercepted a pass from Greene, but his momentum carried him into the backcourt for a turnover with 1.2 seconds left.

Greene sent a pass into the right corner to Williams, who buried the three-point attempt as time expired to force overtime.

Dancler started the scoring in overtime with a fast-break lay-up off a steal by Garang and then redshirt junior forward Dwayne Koroma (Berlin, Germany/Bishop Walsh (Md.)/Iona/Salt Lake C.C./UT Arlington) answered a Wagner free throw with two of his own to give the Dolphins a three-point edge with 3:01 left. Following a missed three-pointer by the Seahawks, Dancler connected on a three-pointer from the left wing to give his team a 69-63 lead with 2:27 remaining.

After a three-pointer from Tyje Kelton on Wagner's next possession, Dancler registered a conventional three-point play with 1:48 remaining.

Following a miss by each team on its next possession, Greene made a lay-up with 59 seconds left, which turned out to be the final scoring of the game as Le Moyne worked 45 seconds off the clock with an offensive rebound in between two missed three-pointers and then Wagner turned the ball over in the final second without getting a shot off.

Le Moyne (8-18, 3-8 NEC), which snapped a five-game losing streak, is home again on Saturday against Chicago State University (4-22, 4-7 NEC) at 2:00 p.m.
