Chicago, Ill. – Junior center Josie Hill tallied 16 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks in 35 minutes played to lead the Chicago State University Cougars to a 76-60 Northeast Conference victory over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team Saturday afternoon at CSU's Jones Convocation Center.
Freshman guard Aiyanna Culver also scored 16 points for the Cougars to go along with six assists and five steals, while sophomore forward Kace Urlacher and freshman guard Tally Williams added 15 points each to help Chicago State avenge a 77-71 overtime loss at Le Moyne on January 18.
Junior guard
Sierra Linnin (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) scored a team-high 10 points for Le Moyne, while senior guard
Emily Florvil (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth) tallied a season-high nine points, including a career-high seven made free throws, in addition to six rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes off the bench.
Sophomore forward
Zhara Adeyemi (Brooklyn, N.Y./South Shore) also grabbed six rebounds for the 'Phins to go along with eight points off the bench, while graduate forward
Haedyn Roberts (Holland Patent, N.Y./Holland Patent) added nine points, which snapped her nine-game double-digit scoring streak.
The Dolphins shot 19-of-24 from the free throw line, marking the seventh time this season that they have taken at least 20 free throws in a game, but the Cougars shot a scorching 47.6% from three-point range during the win, converting a season-high 10 triples on 21 attempts.
CSU also forced Le Moyne into 20 turnovers, while committing just nine, and scored 22 points off of Le Moyne's turnovers.
Hill scored nine of her points in the first quarter as the Cougars took a 22-17 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Adeyemi scored Le Moyne's first seven points of the second quarter, but Culver scored 11 points for CSU during the second period to help the Cougars outscore the Dolphins 22-13 in the frame and take a 44-30 lead into the intermission.
CSU extended its lead in the third, outscoring the Dolphins 21-13 in the penultimate frame, and establishing its largest lead of the contest, a 62-37 advantage, with 2:56 remaining in the quarter. The Dolphins used an 8-1 run between the 8:06 and 5:39 marks in the fourth to trim the deficit to 16. A three-pointer from Linnin with 2:52 on the clock made it 71-58 in favor of the Cougars.
The Dolphins missed two three-point field goal attempts before Williams recorded a three-point play for CSU to extend the lead back to 16 with under a minute remaining.
The Le Moyne College women's basketball team will return to action on Thursday at FDU. The first meeting this season between the Dolphins and the Knights will tipoff at 5:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
