WOMEN'S TENNIS CLAIMS NEC WIN AT MERCYHURST, 5-2

Erie, Pa. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team recorded a 5-2 victory over the Mercyhurst University Lakers in Northeast Conference action Friday evening at the Westwood Racquet Club.

The Dolphins swept the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the day, then claimed wins in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth position singles matches to close out the victory and improve to 2-1 against NEC competition.

The duo of graduate Feriel Mahbouli (Tunisia, Tunisia/Lycee 36/South Carolina State) and sophomore Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) won their fourth consecutive doubles match with a 6-3 victory at first position doubles, while freshman Charlotte Klein (Mellenthin, Germany/Education World Wide (Fla.)), playing in her first match as a Dolphin, helped claim a 6-4 win in the No. 2 doubles match alongside senior Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) against Mercyhurst's Daria Rogova and Andjela Mrvaljevic.

Juniors Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) registered their first doubles victory of the spring with a 6-1 win over Sara Bertolez and Kiersten Brown at the third position.

Mercyhurst claimed their two points in the first and second position singles matches. Kayla Dean bested Klein 6-3, 6-0 in No. 1 singles, while Rogova defeated Mahbouli 6-2, 6-3 in the second position.

Fernando prevailed in the No. 3 singles match against Roisin Murphy by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), while Le Moyne junior Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win over Bertolez in the fourth position.

Barona won a tightly contested contest at the fifth position against Brown by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, and Alvarez defeated Mrvaljevic 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 singles match.

The Dolphins will return to action Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. match at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, then they will return home to host Stonehill College for a Northeast Conference match at Elevate Fitness in DeWitt Monday at 7:30 a.m.
