Clinton, S.C. – The Le Moyne College baseball team erased a two-run deficit Friday against Presbyterian College, but the Blue Hose scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to record a 3-2 walk-off victory against the Dolphins at the PC Baseball Complex in the first day of the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic.
Freshman shortstop
Dominick Russ (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) led Le Moyne at the plate with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore third baseman
Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) provided a base hit and drove in Russ with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.
Senior right-hander
Bobby McBride (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster/UConn/Coastal Carolina) made his first collegiate start for the Dolphins and tallied three strikeouts with two hits, four walks and one run allowed in 2.0 innings of work. Redshirt-sophomore right-hander
AJ Petraitis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) tossed 6.1 innings in relief for the 'Phins, conceding three walks and two runs with three strikeouts.
Presbyterian left fielder Andrew Albertus reached base five times for the Blue Hose, going 2 for 2 at the plate with three walks. Albertus scored the winning run as center fielder Ryan Ouzts drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.
Second baseman Trey Fenderson registered two hits, a walk and an RBI for the Blue Hose, while first baseman Eli Lazio recorded a game-high two runs, crossing the plate following a base hit from Fenderson in the bottom of the second to break the 0-0 tie, then giving PC a 2-0 lead with a solo home run to left field in the fourth.
PC starting pitcher Kyle Mueller recorded eight strikeouts with seven hits, zero walks and two runs allowed in 5.2 innings of work, then right-handed reliever Jacob Fields earned the win after allowing zero hits, zero walks and zero runs with five strikeouts in the final two innings.
With the Dolphins facing a 2-0 deficit at the end of the fifth, sophomore catcher
Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) ripped a single up the middle to lead off the top of the sixth. Romich advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out in the inning, then Russ smacked a single to right field to drive him in and cut Le Moyne's deficit in half.
Senior right fielder
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) was then hit by a pitch, moving Russ into scoring position. Following a pitching change, senior first baseman
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) drew a walk with two outs to load the bases, and Farina drew a walk during the next at bat to bring in Russ.
Albertus drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the ninth, then Fenderson moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. An infield single from right fielder Amman Dewberry allowed Albertus to advance to third, then Mikah Conner drew a walk to load the bases. Ouzts then drew a walk with one out in the inning to drive in Albertus and give the Blue Hose a 3-2 victory.
Le Moyne will return to action tomorrow afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. contest at University of South Carolina - Upstate, before concluding its weekend at the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic with another matchup at Presbyterian on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
