Spartanburg, S.C. – Freshman left-handed pitcher Max Kaplan threw a complete game with 13 strikeouts to lead the University of South Carolina - Upstate Spartans to a 6-1 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team in day two of the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic Saturday at USC Upstate's Harley Park.
Kapan limited the Dolphins to two hits, one walk and one unearned run during the nine innings to register the victory in his first collegiate start.
Third baseman Jake Armsey led the Spartans at the plate with two hits, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the first that erased Le Moyne's 1-0 lead.
Center fielder Scott Newman added a game-high two runs scored and two RBIs with a two-run home run in the eighth to make it 6-1 in favor of USC Upstate.
Senior first baseman
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman shortstop
Dominick Russ (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) recorded one hit each for the Dolphins, while Russ scored the team's lone run of the game in the top of the first after recording a two-out single earlier in the frame.
Graduate left-hander
Max Parker (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) made his second start of the season for the 'Phins, totaling five strikeouts with one walk and four runs allowed in 6.0 innings of work.
Junior right-hander
Luke Connors (Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Monroe Community College) appeared out of the bullpen for Le Moyne, conceding one hit, two walks and two runs with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
Freshman
Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) made his first career start for the Dolphins as the designated hitter, and he reached base in the top of the first after being hit by a pitch.
Le Moyne will play its third and final contest at the OneSpartanburg, Inc. Baseball Classic Sunday against Presbyterian at 12:00 p.m. at the PC Baseball Complex.
