Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) broke the program's career singles wins record, but the Le Moyne College men's tennis team fell to Siena College, 4-3, on Saturday night at Elevate Fitness.
Le Moyne took a 1-0 lead in the match by winning two of the three matches in the doubles competition. Hatton and junior
Adrian Daniel (Tel Aviv, Israel/Montana State) earned the first win, 6-0, over Emilio Salinas and Zino Varouhas-Poole at the first position. Freshmen
Callum Matthew (Dorset, England/Highcliffe School) and
Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi) clinched the point for the Dolphins with a 6-3 victory over Oscar Martinez and Dylan Breen at the second spot. Bruno Loch Varella and Maxwell Acri prevented the sweep with a 6-2 win at the third position over freshmen
Jacob Maravillas (Bergenfield, N.J./Homeschooled) and
Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School).
Hatton registered a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the first position over Martinez for his 59th career singles win, passing Tom Jarry '23 for the most in the program's history. Maravillas rallied to defeat Fabio Varella at the second spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Siena won the third through sixth positions in the singles competition to earn the victory. Loch Varella rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at the third position over Daniel. Acri won at the fourth spot over Matthew 7-6 (9-7), 6-3. Breen defeated Hoyland, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, at the fifth position. Salinas picked up the victory at the sixth spot over freshman
Navya Verma (Patiala, India), 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.
Le Moyne (4-4) is back in action next Saturday against Wagner College at 7:00 p.m. at Elevate Fitness.
