MEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO SAINT JOSEPH’S AND BUTLER

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Le Moyne College men's tennis team fell in a pair of matches to Saint Joseph's University and Butler University on Saturday at the SJU Tennis Complex. Saint Joseph's won, 4-1, while Butler posted a 4-0 win.

The Hawks opened the match by claiming the point in the doubles competition. Justus Agbo and Matthew Cizmarik earned the first win, 6-1, over freshman Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School) and graduate student Bernardo Teixeira (Porto, Portugal/Escola Secundária Fontes Pereira de Mel/University of Porto/Delaware) at the third position. Santiago Valle-Saenz and Matthew Dubas clinched the point with a 6-4 win at the second spot over freshmen Callum Matthew (Dorset, England/Highcliffe School) and Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi). Ernesto Ruy and Othman Bezzaz were tied with senior Peter Hatton (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt/Club Med Academics/Army West Point) and junior Adrian Daniel (Tel Aviv, Israel/Montana State) at 4-4 at the top position when the point was clinched.

Saint Joseph's won three of the first four matches in the singles competition to finish to secure the victory. Valle-Saenz registered a 6-3, 6-2 win at the third spot over freshman Jacob Maravillas (Bergenfield, N.J./Homeschooled). Ruy won at the second position over Daniel with back-to-back scores of 6-4 for a 3-0 lead. Hatton got the Dolphins on the scoreboard by defeating Agbo at the top spot, 6-1, 6-4. With the victory, Hatton eclipsed Tom Jarry '23's program record for combined wins with his 121st. Dubas clinched the victory with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the fourth position over Matthew. Bezzaz was leading Hoyland at the fifth spot, 6-4, 2-1, when the match was stopped, while freshman Navya Verma (Patiala, India) was leading Cizmarik at the sixth position, 6-2, 3-0.
 
Butler got the match started by securing the point in the doubles competition. At the second spot, Riccardo Baldi and Arnesh Singh recorded a 6-1 win over Matthew and Hoyland. Patrick Joss and Nicholas Shirley clinched the point with a 6-3 victory at the third position over Maravillas and Teixeira. Hatton and Daniel earned their ninth consecutive win, 6-4, at the top spot over Nicolas Arts and Rahulniket Konakanchi.

The Bulldogs won all three matches to finish in the singles competition to capture the victory. Baldi won at the second spot over Daniel, 6-1, 6-3. Arts was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at the third position over Hoyland. Aidan William registered back-to-back scores of 6-1 at the sixth spot to defeat senior Xavier Branagan (Wollstonecraft, Australia/St. Aloysius' College). At the first spot, Joss won the first set, 6-4, while Hatton was leading the second, 5-2, when the match was clinched. Konakanchi had a 7-6, 1-0 lead at the fourth position over Bortolaso, while Shirley was leading sophomore Yegor Boyev (London, England/Ashcroft Technology Academy), 6-1, 5-2, at the fifth spot.
 
Le Moyne (4-7) is back in action at the SJU Tennis Complex on Sunday against Coppin State University.
