DeWitt, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College women's tennis team improved 4-1 in Northeast Conference play with a 4-3 victory over the Wagner College Seahawks Saturday at the Elevate Fitness courts in DeWitt.
The two sides played the singles matches first, with both teams claiming three points.
Liepa Sataite defeated graduate student
Feriel Mahbouli (Tunis, Tunisia/Lycee 36/South Carolina State) by a score of 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match. Wagner's Victoria Madail claimed a 6-3, 2-6, 6-0 win over freshman
Charlotte Klein (Mellenthin, Germany/Education World Wide (Fla.)) in the second position, while Daniela Hernandez bested junior
Paula Casares (A Coruna, Spain/Colegio Maristas Cristo Rey) in the No. 3 singles match by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
Le Moyne sophomore
Ella Fernando (Manchester, England/Stonyhurst College) bested Paula Uy 7-6 (6-8), 6-3 in the fourth position, senior
Isabella Barona (Manta, Ecuador/Talentos de Manta) registered a 7-5, 6-4 win over Claudia Lindsey 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles match, and junior
Alicia Alvarez (Madrid, Spain/IES Ortega y Gasset) claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Dariana Vera in the sixth position.
In the doubles portion of the competition, Mahbouli and Fernando defeated Sataite and Leah Ollivierre by a score of 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles match, while Barona and Casares recorded a 6-4 win over Hernandez and Samantha Bentsianov in the third position to clinch the doubles point and the 4-3 win for the 'Phins.
The No. 2 doubles match between Alvarez and junior
Stella Simeonova (Sofia, Bulgaria/National Gymnasium of Mathematics and Natural Sciences) and Wagner's Vera and Madail went unfinished.
The Le Moyne women's tennis will return to action on March 8 against Colgate at Drumlins Country Club before resuming NEC play at Binghamton University on March 9.
