Norfolk, Va. – The Le Moyne College baseball team won both games of a doubleheader at Norfolk State University in the opening contests of a three-game NEC series at NSU's Marty L. Miller Field.
Le Moyne scored the final four runs in game one to claim a 6-5 walk-off win in the series opener, then the Dolphins erased a 6-3 deficit in game two, claiming a 9-7 win in the nightcap to secure the series victory.
Le Moyne improved to 6-2 in Northeast Conference play with the two wins on Saturday, while Norfolk State dropped to 1-10 against conference competition.
The Dolphins and the Spartans will play game three of the conference series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
Game One:
Senior catcher
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman infielder
Tim Denet (West Harrison, N.Y./Iona Prep) drove in two runs each, while sophomore outfielder
Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) tallied two hits, three runs, and tied a program record with five stolen bases in game one.
Infielders Kydese Queen and Terrence Rhodes recorded three hits each for Norfolk State during the setback.
A two-run home run from outfielder Jamal Ritter in the top of the eighth gave the Spartans a 5-2 lead.
Ries drove in Cannon with a single to left field in the bottom of the eighth, Denet drove in junior outfielder
Tyler Campbell (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) with a single through the left side, and Ries scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, Cannon led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and crossed the plate following a bases-loaded walk from Denet, giving the Dolphins a 6-5 win in game one.
Game Two:
Sophomore catcher
Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) tallied a career-high four hits and a career-high three RBIs in game two, while junior center fielder
Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College) recorded a season-high three hits and a season-high three RBIs.
Cannon added three hits during the win, while freshman
Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) scored a season-high four runs with a single, his first career double, two walks and an RBI.
Center fielder Jalan Jones and designated hitter Robert Beatty both drove in two runs for NSU during the nightcap.
Junior left-handed pitcher
Colin Skermont (Yorkville, N.Y./Whitesboro/Herkimer College) earned his first win of the season on the mound in game two after tossing 4.0 innings in relief with four strikeouts, three hits and zero earned runs allowed.
