BASEBALL REGISTERS 13-2 WIN AT FDU

Teaneck, N.J. – The Le Moyne College baseball team recorded season highs in runs (13) and hits (15) on its way to a 13-2 victory over the FDU Knights in the finale of a three-game Northeast Conference series at FDU's Naimoli Complex.

After dropping the first two contests of their first NEC series of the season, the Dolphins put together a complete game Sunday to best the Knights and put the 10-run rule into effect at the end of the seventh inning.

Redshirt-sophomore right-hander AJ Petraitis (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) tossed all 7.0 innings for Le Moyne, picking up his first win of the season after allowing five hits, one walk and two runs with five strikeouts. The one walk is the fewest that Le Moyne has issued in a game so far this season. Petraitis collected his second career complete game during the win.

The Dolphins committed zero errors in the field, had eight different players record an RBI, and had eight players cross the plate.

Junior outfielder Tyler Campbell (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) tallied three RBIs, three hits and two runs with the help of his second home run of the season, freshman infielder Dominick Russ (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) recorded three RBIs, one hit, one run and one walk, freshman infielder Tim Denet (West Harrison, N.Y./Iona Prep) provided a season-high three hits, a season-high two runs and an RBI, and sophomore catcher Cooper Romich (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) scored a game-high three runs to go along with two hits and an RBI.

Freshman designated hitter Derek Diaz (White Plains, N.Y./Iona Prep) contributed a season-high two runs batted in with a base hit and a run scored, while senior catcher Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) recorded two hits for the third consecutive game in the series in addition to an RBI.

Junior infielder Diego Urreta and sophomore outfielder Jimmy Mantuano both recorded an RBI for FDU during the setback, while freshman Hunter Ray registered a team-high two hits.

Campbell gave the Dolphins a 1-0 lead in the top of the second with a solo home run to center field, then Le Moyne doubled its advantage later in the inning when junior outfielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes Community College) drove in senior outfielder Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) with a chopper to the left side.

Petraitis worked around a leadoff single in the second, getting back-to-back ground balls followed by a strikeout.

Ries singled through the left side to leadoff the third, but FDU starting pitcher Jordan Savinon recorded three straight strikeouts to strand Ries on base.

The Knights cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the frame as Mantuano launched a solo home run to center field to record his second long ball of the series.

Le Moyne responded in the fourth, adding four runs via RBI singles from Diaz and Ries, followed by a two-RBI single from Campbell.

A sacrifice fly from Diaz, which brought in Romich, extended Le Moyne's lead to 7-1 in the fifth.

Urreta drove a double down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth to drive in freshman infielder Felix Gonzalez and give the Knights their second run of the game.

Le Moyne broke the game open in the top of the sixth, tallying six runs in the frame to make it 13-2. Patchett and Denet delivered back-to-back RBI singles, then Romich smashed a double that bounced over the left-center field fence and brought Patchett around to score. Following a walk from Goodness, Russ stepped to the plate and worked the count full. All three Le Moyne runners took off on the 3-2 pitch, and Russ smoked a single to center field. Denet and Romich scored standing up, and Goodness raced around the bags and scored all the way from first to give Russ a bases-clearing single.

With the ten-run rule in play, Petraitis recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh to end the contest and secure the Dolphins' first victory of the season.

The Le Moyne College baseball team will return to action next weekend with a three-game NEC series at University of Maryland Eastern Shore, with game one slated for Friday at 3:00 p.m.
