Bridgewater, N.J. – Le Moyne College men's lacrosse sophomore goalkeeper
Lucas Winger (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and head coach
Dan Sheehan earned major awards from the Northeast Conference, as voted upon by the league's eight head coaches and announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
Le Moyne, which won at least a share of a regular season conference championship for the 22nd time in the program's history, had five student-athletes honored by the conference in addition to Sheehan. Winger was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Year and Sheehan was selected as the Coach of the Year. To go along with his Defensive Player of the Year honors, Winger was named to the first team, where he was joined by graduate student midfielder
Ethan Loun (West Linn, Ore./West Linn) and senior defenseman
Maui Wilhelm (Saint Johns, Fla./Creekside). Senior faceoff specialist
Sam Getty (Orchard Park, N.Y./Canisius HS) earned a spot on the second team and freshman midfielder
Emmet McDermott (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) was tabbed to the all-Rookie team.
Winger is the seventh Dolphin goalkeeper, for a total of 12 times, to be selected as the top goalie in a conference. A starter in each of the last nine games, Winger has a 7.87 goals against average, 132 saves and a .629 save percentage over 594:38 between the pipes. The Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on three occasions, he leads the NEC in goals against average and save percentage. If Le Moyne student-athletes were eligible for national rankings, he would be second in save percentage and fourth in goals against average. He has made at least 10 saves in all nine starts along with the Hobart game when he seized the position, including three games with at least 15 saves.
Sheehan earns his eighth conference Coach of the Year recognition and his first since 2008. He has guided the Dolphins to a regular season conference championship for the 19th time in his career and moved into the NCAA men's lacrosse top-10 for wins against Wagner College on April 5.
Loun earns all-conference accolades for the first time in his career. A starter on the first midfield line in all 14 games, he has 29 points on 17 goals and a team best-tying 12 assists, while adding 15 ground balls. The NEC co-Player of the Week on April 7, he has nine games with multiple points, including a career-best seven in the victory over Wagner, and four games with at least two goals, including a career high-tying four against Wagner.
Wilhelm earns his first all-conference recognition. A starter in all 14 games at close defense, he has 18 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. He has five games with multiple ground balls and three games with multiple caused turnovers.
Getty gives the Dolphins an all-conference faceoff specialist for the fifth straight year. The starter at the dot in all 14 games, he is 119-of-228 for a .522 win percentage with 54 ground balls. He ranks sixth in the NEC in win percentage, while his 119 wins are the fourth-most in the NEC. He also ranks sixth in the conference in ground balls per game. He has five games with at least 10 faceoff wins and four games with at least five ground balls.
McDermott has 24 points on 12 goals and a team best-tying 12 assists as a starter on the first midfield line in all 13 games played. He is one of just two Dolphins (
Zachary Delaney is the other) to record at least one point in each of the first 13 games. He has six games with multiple points, including a career-best four in a victory over Cleveland State on March 22, and four games with at least two goals.
Le Moyne (9-5, 6-1 NEC) will now host the NEC Championship Thursday and Saturday at Ted Grant Field as the top seed. The Dolphins will begin pursuit of their first NEC tournament title and 17th overall conference tournament championship on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. against fourth-seeded Detroit Mercy.
