Syracuse, N.Y. – The Wagner College Seahawks registered a 13-7 victory over the Le Moyne College baseball team Saturday at Dick Rockwell Field to claim a series win over the Dolphins.
Le Moyne and Wagner split a doubleheader on Friday, with Wagner claiming a 10-3 win in game one and Le Moyne responding with a 5-0 win in the nightcap, setting up a rubber match on Saturday between two sides towards the top of the NEC Standings.
Wagner jumped on the Dolphins early in the series finale, scoring five runs in the top of the first inning with the help of a three-run home run from freshman infielder Matt Sutera.
Le Moyne got a run back in the bottom of the second as senior catcher
Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) launched his first home run of the season, then the Dolphins put up five runs in the bottom of the third, with the help of a solo home run from senior outfielder
Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) and a two-RBI single from Ries, to take a 6-5 lead.
Patchett's home run was his fourth of the season, and the 29
th of his Le Moyne career, which moves him into fourth place on the program's all-time career home runs list.
Wagner tied the score at 6-6 with a leadoff home run from first baseman Xavier Ulrich in the top of the fourth, then they went ahead 8-6 in the fifth following an RBI double from third baseman Connor Roche and a sacrifice fly from Ulrich.
A solo home run from junior outfielder
Tyler Campbell (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Onondaga C.C.) to lead off the bottom of the fifth cut Le Moyne's deficit in half.
Wagner extended its lead to 11-7 with three runs in the top of the seventh via a solo home run from sophomore designated hitter Joseph Mennella, an RBI double from Ulrich, and an RBI single from center fielder Lukas Torres.
Mennella smashed his second home run of the game, a two-run shot, in the top of the eighth to make it 13-7 in favor of the visitors.
Following the series, Wagner sits in second in the NEC standings with a 12-3 conference record, while Le Moyne is fourth with an 8-4 resume against NEC competition.
Ries finished the contest with a team-high and personal season-high three runs batted in to go along with two hits, one walk and one run scored, while Campbell also produced two hits in addition to one RBI and one run.
Mennella went 4 for 4 at the plate for the Seahawks with two doubles, two home runs, four RBIs and four runs scored, while Ulrich went 3 for 3 with one double, one home run, one walk and two runs scored.
Wagner junior right-handed pitcher Justin Roitman collected the win on the mound after recording six strikeouts with one hit, one run, and one walk allowed in 3.2 innings pitched in relief, while junior right-handed pitcher Jason Masick earned the save after holding the Dolphins scoreless over the final 3.0 innings with five strikeouts.
The Le Moyne baseball team will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference matchup at Binghamton University, then they will host Delaware State University for an NEC series at Dick Rockwell Field from April 11-13.
