BASEBALL CLAIMS 16-6 WIN OVER UALBANY IN FINAL NON-CONFERENCE GAME

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore infielder Mike Whelehan (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) launched his first career home run and tallied a career-high five runs batted in to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 16-6 win over the UAlbany Great Danes in seven innings on Tuesday at Dick Rockwell Field.

Whelehan smashed a three-run shot over the left field wall during a seven-run inning for the Dolphins in the bottom of the first, then senior infielder Benji Ries (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) delivered a two-run home run in the sixth, and sophomore infielder Ethan Farina (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) ripped a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Dolphins a 16-6 lead and end the contest via run rule.

Whelehan finished the game with three hits and two runs in addition to his five RBIs, while Ries tallied two hits, two walks, three runs and two RBIs, and junior infielder Adam Sullivan added three hits, one walk, three runs and two RBIs.

Freshman catcher Robert Wegrzyn (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara-Wheatfield) recorded his first two career RBIs with a base hit to center field in the first inning.

Graduate right-handed pitcher Joel Connors (Brampton, Ontario/Heart Lake/Lakeland C.C./St. Andrew's/St. Bonaventure) improved his record to 4-1 on the year after recording four strikeouts with two hits, zero walks and zero runs allowed in 2.0 innings pitched in relief.

UAlbany junior outfielder Luke Filippi led the Great Danes at the plate with two hits, two walks, one RBI and three runs scored, while redshirt-senior Jared Toby contributed two hits and one RBI.

The Dolphins took a commanding early lead with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior outfielder Paulie Goodness (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon/Finger Lakes C.C.), sophomore outfielder Jack Cannon (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder), Ries and Sullivan drew four consecutive walks to record the first run of the game. Farina lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Cannon, then Wegrzyn ripped a two-run single to center field, and Whelehan capped off the inning with a three-run shot to left field.

The Dolphins added five runs in the bottom of the fourth with the help of a two-run single from Whelehan and an RBI double from Goodness to increase their advantage to 12-1.

The Great Danes got three runs back in the top of the fifth, then an RBI double from senior outfielder Wyatt Patchett (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva) in the bottom of the frame made it 13-4 in favor of the Dolphins.

A solo home run from Filippi in the top of the sixth cut the deficit to eight.

Ries extended Le Moyne's lead to double digits with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

UAlbany redshirt-sophomore infielder Victor Mazzara recorded an RBI single in the top of the seventh to make it 15-6 in favor of Le Moyne.

Farina led off the bottom of the seventh for Le Moyne and smashed a solo shot to left field to end the contest and give the Dolphins a 16-6 victory in their final non-conference game of the season.

The Le Moyne baseball team will close out the regular season with a conference series against Central Connecticut State University at Dick Rockwell Field from May 15-17.
