Tennessee Rainwater (Davenport, Wash./Davenport/Utah Tech) tallied a career-high 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 72-57 come-from-behind victory over Chicago State University in NEC action on Saturday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center.
Rainwater posted 10 of his points in the second half, while also recording four assists and three rebounds in the contest. Redshirt junior guard
Trent Mosquera (Boston, Mass./Belmont Hill School) turned in 16 points, a career-high nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Graduate student forward
Shilo Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Vincennes/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) registered 13 points and four rebounds. Junior guard
Samuel Hincapie (Medellin, Colombia/Gateway Legacy Prep (Mo.)/Lake Land College) recorded 10 of his 11 points in the second half and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds.
Marcus Tankersley scored 10 points in each half to lead all players with 20 points. Doyel Cockrill III posted 14 points, all of which came in the first half. Braelon Bush contributed seven points, seven rebounds and 10 assists.
The Cougars opened the game with the first nine points over the initial 3:29 on a trio of three-pointers by Corey Sands, Bush and Cockrill III.
Following another Cockrill III three-pointer to give Chicago State a 14-7 lead with 15:04 remaining in the first half, the Dolphins rattled off 10 of the next 12 points to take their first lead of the game. Mosquera made a jumper, Jackson made a lay-up and two free throws, Rainwater converted two foul shots and then Mosquera converted a lay-up for the lead.
Chicago State regained the lead with the next five points on a lay-up by Tankersley and a three-pointer by Cockrill, but the Dolphins followed with six points of their own for their first two-point lead with 5:40 left. Rainwater had a conventional three-point play and then Mosquera buried a three-pointer.
After the teams traded points over the next two and one-half minutes, the Cougars scored seven straight points and nine of the final 12 of the half to take a 34-30 at the intermission. Cockrill III made his fourth three-pointer of the half for the lead and then converted a lay-up, while Tankersley followed with a lay-up. Following three points by the Dolphins over two possessions, Tankersley concluded the scoring with a lay-up with seven seconds left.
The Dolphins scored five of the first seven points of the second half to get within one, but Chicago State countered with the next five points for a 41-35 lead with 15:08 left.
Le Moyne responded with the next six points to even the score at 41 with 14:00 remaining. Rainwater had a conventional three-point play, Jackson made a foul shot and then Rainwater had a fast-break lay-up off a steal.
Tankersley answered with the next four points to give the lead back to the Cougars before the teams traded points over the next three and one-half minutes.
After Bush hit a jumper to put Chicago State in front for the final time at 51-50 with 8:29 left, the Dolphins exploded for 20 of the next 23 to take control of the game. Jackson put the Dolphins up for good with two free throws and then had a dunk and then Hincapie made a lay-up to force a Chicago State timeout.
Following a Tankersley lay-up with 6:00 left to make it 60-54, Hincapie and Mosquera drained three-pointers, Rainwater made a foul shot and then Hincapie drilled another three-pointer for a game-high 70-54 lead with 2:23 left.
Chicago State scored the next three points before freshman guard
Eli Greenberg (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) closed out the game's scoring with a lay-up.
Le Moyne (8-10, 3-2 NEC), which has won back-to-back games over the Cougars, returns home to face NEC-leading LIU on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
