LE MOYNE FALLS TO MERCYHURST 3-1

Erie, P.A. - The Le Moyne volleyball team were defeated in four-sets by Mercyhurst University on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.. The Lakers took the match by set scores of 23-25, 25-14, 25-22 and 25-15.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mercyhurst took a commanding lead to start the first set, leading 12-3 at one point. The Dolphins then went on a seven point run to get back into the set, before taking 10 of the last 11 points to narrowly win the set, 25-23. The Lakers swiftly took the lead in the second set and never took their foot off the gas. A series of three and four point runs gave Mercyhurst the win, 25-14.

The third set saw the Lakers take another commanding lead, starting the game off by winning eight of the first 11 points. The Dolphins managed to take the lead, 18-15 before Mercyhurst went on a five point run to finish the set off, winning 25-22. The fourth and final set of the match started similar to the rest, with the Lakers taking an early lead. Much like the second, Le Moyne was unable to mount a comeback falling to Mercyhurst by a score of 25-15 to lose the set, and the match.

Freshman opposite Gabriella Schemidt (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) led the team with nine kills. Sophomore setter Skylar Jehlen (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) contributed a team high 11 assists alongside an ace to the match while freshman outside hitter Avery Stromberg (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) anchored the defense with eight digs.

Le Moyne heads home for a midweek matchup against Siena University on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m..
