VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO LIU

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Sara van Gisteren landed 11 kills to lead LIU to a 3-0 win over the Le Moyne College volleyball team in NEC action on Saturday afternoon at the Brooklyn Athletics Center.

After LIU scored the first two points of the first set, the Dolphins scored five straight points and six of the next seven. The Sharks responded with 13 straight points and 22 of the last 25 points for a 25-9 win. LIU had a pair of 3-0 spurts in the first eight points of the second set before rattling off nine consecutive points. After the Dolphins countered with five of the next seven points, the Sharks closed out the set with eight of the last 10 points for a 25-10 victory. Following a 2-1 lead by the Dolphins in the third set, the Sharks scored six straight points and 18 of the next 22 to take a 19-6 advantage. Le Moyne scored four of the next five point to trim its deficit, but the Sharks closed out the match with three of the last four points.
 
Fourth year Branwyn Lupton (Napanee, Ontario/Napanee District Secondary School) led the Dolphins with five kills on a .385 hitting percentage and added three blocks. First year Katie Barbour (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) and third year Skylar Jehlen (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) split the setting duties with seven and five assists, respectively, while Barbour had three digs.

van Gisteren hit .500 on her way to the 11 kills and flirted with a triple-double with eight service aces and seven digs. Bella Correia recorded 10 kills on a .643 hitting percentage to go with five digs. Sara Garcia landed nine of her 11 attempts for kills for an .818 hitting percentage. Dilara Elmacioglu dished out 34 assists to facilitate the offense and had six digs and four service aces.

The Dolphins are back in action on Friday for their first home match of the season against the University of New Haven at 6:00 p.m.
