WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UPENDED BY SMU

Dallas, Texas – The Le Moyne women's basketball team (0-1) was defeated 72-36 by the SMU Mustangs (1-0) in its season opener in Dallas, Texas, on Tuesday night.

Recap:

The first quarter was evenly matched early on, with fifth-year forward Kendal Moxey (Centreville, Md./Bowling Green) putting up the first points of the Dolphins' season two minutes in. The quarter saw four lead changes and ended with a 3:16 12-0 run by SMU, as the Mustangs were up 20-11 to end the first. Moxey led Le Moyne with four points and three rebounds.

The Mustangs stretched their lead to double digits to start the second quarter, keeping the Dolphins pinned in their defensive end. The pressure led to an offensive drought for Le Moyne that lasted until the 6:13 mark as fourth-year forward Sydney Postell (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) made a layup for her first points of the season.

SMU continued to be disruptive, racking up five steals and extending the lead to 20. Le Moyne could not get the shots to fall as it looked for a way back into the game, going into the break down 39-18. Postell closed out the half with a team-high five points, all scored in the second quarter.

Fourth-year Dolphins forward Ashley Buragas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./Mineral Area) injected some energy into her team, taking a charge to begin the third quarter. Third-year guard Eli Clark (Oakhurst, N.J./Ocean Township) got the first bucket for either team, swishing home her second 3-pointer of the contest at 8:26. SMU responded with a 9-2 run that put the Mustangs up by 25 halfway through the quarter. They continued to pad the lead to a game-high 31 points off their 15th steal.

Postell added to her tally with another from beyond the arc, breaking a three-minute scoring drought for Le Moyne. After being outshot 10-19, the Dolphins had 10 minutes to chip away at a 30-point deficit. Clark, Moxey and first-year guard Gianna Nichols (Sturbridge, Mass./St. George's) all reached six points in the quarter; Postell led the team with eight.

The fourth quarter was the second of single-digit scoring for Le Moyne, as second-year guard Peyton Dincher (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) recorded all three baskets for the Dolphins. She finished with eight points on the night, matching Postell for team-best. SMU was held to 14 points in the final quarter, but took the win 72-36.
