DeWitt, N.Y. – Mercyhurst University registered a 4-3 victory over the Le Moyne College men's tennis team on Tuesday afternoon at Elevate Fitness.
Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead in the match by claiming the point in the doubles competition. The Dolphins won the first match to finish as freshman
Carlo Zucchini (Varese, Italy/European School of Varese) and sophomore
Navya Verma (Patiala, India/Apollo Public School) blanked Petar Belosevic and Colm Schultz at the top spot, 6-0. Danylo Rekun and Lukas Cabue evened doubles with a 6-4 win over sophomore
Luke Hoyland (Sheffield, England/Birkdale School) and freshman
Gabriel Segubiense (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) at the second position. Nikola Radisic and Raul Davalos clinched the point with a 7-5 victory at the third spot over sophomores
Callum Matthew (Dorset, England/Highcliffe School) and
Lorenzo Bortolaso (Bassano del Grappa, Italy/IT IS Enrico Fermi).
The teams split the singles competition, which led to Mercyhurst capturing the match. Each of the first three matches went to a third set. At the top spot, Zucchini rallied for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory over Rekun for his third straight win. Matthew also earned his third consecutive victory by defeating Cabue, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, at the second position. Belosevic rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at the third spot over Hoyland. Bortolaso gave the Dolphins a 3-2 lead by downing Schultz at the fourth position, 7-5, 6-3, in the only match that ended in straight sets. Mykhailo Polishchuck was a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 winner at the fifth spot over Segubiense. Radisic captured a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 victory at the sixth position over Verma.
Le Moyne (1-4, 1-2 NEC) returns to the courts on Friday, March 6 against Colgate University at Drumlins Country Club at 2:00 p.m.
