BARNEY’S GAME-WINNER GIVES WOMEN’S LACROSSE 11-10 OVERTIME VICTORY OVER BINGHAMTON

Vestal, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Maddi Barney (Lorraine, N.Y./South Jefferson) scored just under one minute into overtime to give the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team an 11-10 victory over Binghamton University on Wednesday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

Binghamton started the game's scoring five and one-half minutes into the contest as Emma Blloshmi finished off a feed from Jess Robinson.

Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece with 5:48 remaining in the opening quarter as redshirt junior attacker Olivia Lockwood (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee/Onondaga C.C.) found the back of the net during an extra-player situation.

The Bearcats rattled off three goals in the final five minutes of the quarter. Blloshmi netted her 13th goal of the season with 5:00 on the clock. Robinson then converted a free-position shot with 1:07 to go and then scored in an extra-player situation with 24 seconds left.

Binghamton extended its run to four straight goals as Blloshmi netted her third goal of the day with 10:45 until halftime.

The Dolphins countered with back-to-back goals. In an extra-player situation, junior midfielder Julia Blakeslee (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) tallied her fourth goal of the year with 8:04 to go. Lockwood got the Dolphins within two with 3:32 left off a feed from Barney.

Blloshmi capped the scoring in the half with 1:31 left.

Le Moyne ran off the first four goals of the third quarter to take the lead for the first time. Lockwood started the streak at the 12:26 with her third goal of the game, giving her hat tricks in each game she has played in the second half. Sophomore midfielder Emily Markovina (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) got the Dolphins within one with 9:52 left after collecting a pass from Lockwood. Just 59 seconds later, senior attacker Alexa Strelick (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) finished off a dish from Lockwood to even the score at six. Barney put Le Moyne in front for the first time with 6:20 left by converting a free-position shot in a player-down situation.

Christina Lauro missed a catch, but redirected a pass from Blloshmi into the net with 3:41 remaining in the quarter to knot the score at seven.

Barney gave the lead back to the Dolphins with 15 seconds to go in the stanza off a feed from graduate student attacker Francesca Tortora (Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Stony Brook).

The teams alternated goals in the fourth quarter. Robinson tied the score with 12:20 left by converting a free-position shot. Lockwood put the Dolphins back in front 51 seconds later with her 15th tally of the season. Blloshmi, who led the nation in free-position goals per game last year at 2.0 per contest, tied the score at nine with 5:38 to play on a free-position shot. Strelick answered with 2:50 left with a free-position goal of her own. Lauro tied the score for the final time with 1:15 remaining after taking a pass in front of the net from Mia Forte.

Le Moyne won the ensuing draw control and Lockwood put a shot into the back of the net, but it was ruled to be after the quarter expired.

Blakeslee won the opening draw control of overtime and carried the ball into the offensive end, where the Dolphins called timeout. Just over 30 seconds later, Barney drew a free-position attempt. She raced toward the net and deposited the ball into the back of the net for her third goal of the game and her eighth of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Amanda Manfredi (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) registered eight saves, including four in the second quarter, to earn the victory between the pipes. Blakeslee finished the contest with nine draw controls for the second straight game. Freshman Katy Harbold (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led the defense with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Emily Backlin turned away 11 shots in the loss for the Bearcats.

Le Moyne (3-1), which has won all three games it has gone to overtime since returning to the Division I level, is back in action on Saturday at Manhattan University at 12:00 p.m.
