West Haven, Conn. – Jabri Fitzpatrick registered 28 points to lead the University of New Haven to a 66-59 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the Hazell Center.
With the loss – and Mercyhurst's overtime victory over Stonehill – the Dolphins are the fourth seed in next week's NEC Championship and will host Stonehill on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Dolphins dropped both meetings with the Skyhawks, including just last Saturday on the road.
Graduate student forward
Shilo Jackson (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central/Vincennes/Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) led the Dolphins in the setback with 24 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jakai Sanders (Brooklyn, N.Y./Eagle Academy) tallied 17 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Fitzpatrick recorded 17 of his game-high point total in the first half, while adding eight assists and five rebounds. Najimi George tallied 15 points and Andre Pasha registered 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Le Moyne scored the first four points of the game and eight of the first 10 over the initial four minutes. Jackson had six of the eight points for the Dolphins in the span.
George got the Chargers within two with a three-pointer, but the Dolphins answered with the next six points and 10 of the next 13 points for a 20-11 lead with 9:18 left. Four Dolphins scored in the span, including four from Sanders to cap it.
New Haven responded with a 15-6 run to tie the score at 26 with 2:39 remaining. Fitzpatrick led the run with seven points, including five free throws, and Pasha had four, including the game-tying lay-up.
Jackson put the Dolphins back in front with a lay-up, but Fitzpatrick gave New Haven its first lead with a three-pointer with 45 seconds left. Sanders countered with one of his own with 25 seconds left, but Fitzpatrick made two foul shots with three seconds to go to even the score at 31 at the intermission.
After the teams traded points over the opening three minutes of the second half, Pasha hit a three-pointer and Fitzpatrick made a lay-up to put the Chargers in front by six with 14:25 left.
The Dolphins got four points from Jackson around a Teshaun Steele lay-up and then Sanders drained a three-pointer to pull within 43-42 with 12:26 to play.
After six points from each team over the next four minutes, junior guard
Samuel Hincapie (Medellin, Colombia/Gateway Legacy Prep (Mo.)/Lake Land College) hit a jumper and then Jackson had a fast-break dunk to put the Dolphins in front.
Following alternating three-pointers by Pasha and Sanders, George had a conventional three-point play to put the Chargers up for good.
Maison Adeleye extended the lead with two free throws and then Pasha nailed a three-pointer with 1:48 to play.
Jackson answered with a dunk with 1:28 to go, but Fitzpatrick countered with a lay-up with 46 seconds left. Sanders got the Dolphins within four for the final time with 16 seconds to play with a lay-up. Fitzpatrick then made two free throws with 13 seconds remaining and another with 0.4 seconds to close out the game's scoring.
